Carburetor Options Needed

1983 International 284 Compact Tractor
w/Mazda 4 cylinder 26 HP Gas Engine (M4-71G)

My dad's had this one for a while. Last season, it started stalling while going uphill. Everything in the fuel system checks out but the carburetor. Dad is a stroke survivor, and he foolishly worked on the unit himself without someone present and as a result a small spring was lost. Best efforts to get the carburetor working again have been fruitless. An exact match unit is several hundred dollars and a shop had it for 3 weeks in an attempt to repair it but had to send it back as it was too old to find replacement components.

There are supposedly hundreds of carburetors out there, and I'm wondering if there's someone who knows of a compatible model for this tractor other than OEM. The tractor will run fine, but getting it to start is the pain. Since he can hardly manage driving the tractor anymore, he'd like to get it running again so it can be sold...unless someone wants a tractor and implements but have to figure out why the carburetor is having problems.

Any help or insight?

Goon line and see if Zenith Carburetor has a site. You could call them and see what they might recommend. I got one from them many years ago.

Did a little looking around and it"appears" the carb. is A Nikki.

Here is screen scrape of so info that maybe of some help. The Satoh 650G used a TA/TB gas engine with a Nikki carb. that appears to be identical to the IH 284's carb. If you look at the Satoh 650G carb the Nikki looks to be a dead ringer for the IH 284 per IHC parts catalog.

Vehicles that Utilize Similar Mazda Engines

The Mazda engines used in the Satoh Bison S650G was also used in a variety of vehicles and equipment. When searching for parts at an auto parts store these vehicles may be of benefit.

The Satoh S650G shares its engine with numerous vehicles from around the world. Unfortunately many were not available in the U.S. but knowing them may still be of benefit when searching for parts. Here is a list of vehicles and equipment that utilized one of the two available engine's offered in the S650G (Mazda PB100 or TA/TB):

1971 Mazda 1200 Truck (TA/TB) - many forum users have reported success having NAPA auto parts search for parts for this model truck to find compatible replacement parts.
Yale Forklifts (PB 100) - manufactured from 1971 - 1973
Some International IH284 Tractors
(Austrailia) Mazda Bongo Vans (PB 100) - manufactured from 1968 - 1978
(Austrailia) Mazda Familia 1000 Sedan (PB 100) - manufactured from 1967 - 1968
(Austrailia) Mazda Familia 1000 Pickup (PB 100) - manufactured from 1967 - 1978
(Austrailia) Mazda Familia 1000 Coupe (PB 100) - manufactured from 1966 - 1968

I hope this is of some help but please verify the above info.on you own. I know how difficult it is looking parts for those "hybrid" tractor are.
Messicks.com shows most carb. parts available from IH for the IH 284.

Hope this helps

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I thought I'd share the outcome of this adventure. I'm not sure where (I thought here), but I found a tractor parts company in Roanoke, Virginia (Valley Power Products, Inc.).

These guys attempted to repair the carburetor, but ultimately, they couldn't get it to work on their "test engine" that they use to ensure all repairs are done properly.

So, we went to the next stage...they told us to bring in the intake manifold from the tractor and they would fit a new(er) model carburetor and ensure it works. It was significantly more expensive than just fixing the OEM carburetor, but it worked.

The only problem we had when it came back was a couple of adjustments needed so it would start and idle without holding the throttle open. Clearly, there were minor differences between their test motor and the motor in our tractor.

So, new life for an old tractor (which we're going to sell but at least now as a running unit).
