15-30 McCormick Deering questions

Went and winched a 15-30 on my trailer and put in my shop. Has not run in several years. Was fixed up by an older fellow that died last year in his mid 90's. Young man inherited it.
It was loose last year. It is stuck now. Going to pull head today. Could see water standing on top of #3 piston but it was not rusty inside.
Did not have time last night to locate serial number.
Where is number located?
What books are available for this?
It has new tires on it.
Also has a starter on it that engages a car flywheel bolted where the belt pulley was located.
Want to get the pistons loosened up with the head off and check it for cracks.
I will have plenty of questions as we work on it.
Thanks, Richard in NW SC

Personly,I believe you might be better off using a air hose, blow cylinders out, make sure no water in the cylinders and fill with a good penetrating oil,let set for some time, and try to put pressure on the front crank. My 15-30 locked up through the winter one year and my friend placed a hyd jack under the hand crank and it poped loose

The casting code and serial # should be found under the belly, you will have to crawl under and look up. I hope it had antifreeze in it and not just plan water!
It is good to pull apart to inspect but alot of work. Like James said blow out the water and soak it a couple days with ATF see if you can pop it loose. As long as it has a 15-30 manifold down exhaust and not an W-30 manifold up exhaust it should not be rain water. oldiron29

DO NOT TAKE THE HEAD OFF. Fill the bores with ATF then do as James sugests and put the starting crank in the
pulling up position thentput a jack under it till the front wheels are off the ground. Then just leave it till it frees off.
Been using this method for over 40 years of playing arround with old tractors. MJ.

done same thing. I also tapped for 15 min on the crank handle to vibrate motor as best I could. Motor pop loose.Engine release brand guarantees their product only if vibrated in some way.

Thanks for all the ideas. I spent today cleaning out a corner of my 30x60 shop to back it into. Tomorrow we will start trying to soak it. I will post photos of everything as we work on it including the starter setup.

My 1929 Regular was stuck when I hauled it home.... turned out that the magneto was stuck, not the motor. I agree with the suggestions made - blow the water out of the cylinder and soak with your choice of fluid, then work the motor free gently until you can turn it over. Don't force it. Also check your valves to see if any are stuck. My regular had 1/4" valve clearance until the motor was rolled through several cycles, eventually closing completely and yielding around 0.015".

Rick, I had a 10-20 for many years, I googled 10-20 found a lot of places for parts. I bought a repro owners - shop book for it. It was junk, pages missing, pages out of order. it was from 1 of the larger reprint places. Would advise you look on ebay or a site like that for an original one. I found an original for my 10-20 at the flee market at the fair grounds in Des Moines Iowa.
