Super M Rebuild.

Hey guys, Getting ready to send out my block for cleaning, press out sleeves etc. Crank definitely has to be cut. This thing has a distallate head. (Nuts!) I know i should look for a gas head , but being on a tight budget... How much horsepower would I gain with a gas head? I'm building this for farm work. Not pulling. I'd be happy with 50 horse. I know .... I can boost it with a Keystone turbo. Maybe down the road. What kind of HP can I expect with the original head? Some people say with a 3 angle valve job, and a little cam grinding I can get 55HP? My cam looks good.... no flat lobes. I value everyones input. Thanks! Darryl

Dont know how much difference the different head will make.I'm sure it will make some. You can 'plane' the existing head to get more compression. Domed pistons will also help. There is an 8000' altitude piston that was used at one time. I put oversize(4 1/8") sleves/pistons(from a 450) in my SM 35 years ago.You could do the same. The 'Super' is still turning almost 60 horse at over 5000'altitude.Also 'tweaked' the governor a bit(100rpm?). Only pull it wide open on full load. Makes a difference, gives it a bit more power

Well as long as it's all apart i would go with the reground cam, from Custom Built, In Algona,Iowa. I have stopped in there, he is the real deal in my opinion, The new cam grind will hold the valve deeper, but not longer. It gives a honest 5 hp more.

I have a SM with 1/8 over sleeves and the rest stock and it is my favorite tractor. I added power steering and three point it already had a live pump (phase two) the only thing missing is a live pto.

What are you using for pistons? I have 1 M with 4" domed pistons (Not sure of the brand now.), 450 head and cam and propane manifold. Its has a M&W gov and some carb work. Pushing 55 on the dyno years ago. (That a M, not a Super M)

This is what HP IH claimed for a working tractor engine with 4-1/8 fire crater pistons in both engines. Piston tops were different between the two even if the same altitude pistons for each engine were used because of the difference in the gas heads. Notice they didn't want distillate or kerosene heads used with the packages. For a SM they claim a little more power if the 400 and 450 camshaft is used. Just depends on date of publication if it says use the right hand thread cam or left hand thread cam that came in 400 and 450 engines. They limited the SM engine two 22 degrees maximum advance and the 400 to 25 degrees. These engines weren't tuned for the best overall HP like a pulling tractor but to operate in working conditions. Manifold number listed for a little more power is the one used on 450 gas tractors.
If getting another head I would just go ahead and get a 400 or 450 gas head for a working tractor. Find someone selling a good piston and sleeve set that works with that head.

If you do go thru the expense of a new manifold, get the bigger exhaust outlet,[same size as a 806] it's ony 2 horsepower at the most, but u have to take the die grinder to the hood, to get it back on. The plain jane propane manifold didnt help my brothers super mta one bit.

You are going to spend way more money on a turbo, used heads are cheap, put a new head, cam and dome pistons in now.

Two different distributor shafts used with the advance limit hole a different size. 400 and 450 gasoline came with a 25 and IH must have decided that was close enough. Fire crater kits for H, SH, M and SM included a 22 degree shaft. Advance springs also included with shaft along with shaft gear pin.

Yes I will definitely be going with a domed piston. There are domed pistons in there now. I'll be posting pics showing them and part numbers at a later date.I know I SHOULD go with the gas head. I forgot about using. a 400-450 head. I doubt if i will ever use the turbo. I've heard a few horror stories on here about them. Don't want to blow up a rebuilt engine after all that work and money.I think I'd try it if the engine had a couple more main bearings. Nice to fantasize about though . LOL Thanks for all the responses

Find a super M head and an LP manifold and have the head totally reworked with new springs, valve guides, and seats and valves if needed . If you can find one get the Fire Crater Kit for a 450 and make sure you put the kit in carb and distributor for the kit. You put a mark on crankshaft pulley marking 22 degree advance. Check governor for wear and replace spring. if you up the RPM by 200 RPM you will be putting out about 60-65 HP. We did this years ago to an M that had a 264 block in it.
