I just bought a 684 with a loader worked good a couple times plowing snow now the power steering dosent always work and the loader dosent wanna go up to good. Is there a filter for the hy tranz? And were do u fill it? I have a 706 that did this two years ago and I changed the oil in filter in rear end and was good too go so hoping for same now thanks

Check for external leaks. if the system is pretty tight, I would over fill the hydraulic system I would put in 2.5 gallons over full to begin with. IIRC the filter is under a bolted on cover on the rt side. It has about a gallon or less that will dump out. (this site has owners manuals and repair manuals. Jim

If it is like the 574 It is on the left side right on the MCV one bolt tunk it with a small block and will fall into a pail. Kind of a pain to get to. Sounds like the valve in the bottom is stuck. Try increasing the throttle if no response then the filter. there is a plug in the bottom of the MCV that you unscrew then pull that valve body out. I think it is the pressure regulating valve for the steering priority. If it gets stuck you have to pull it out and then with a small rod wrap some emery cloth around it and use it to hone the bore just a bit. It gets the burrs out ,if there are any. I did it by hand on our 674. Then just turn the tractor over after wiping it out. That will help flush any grit out. Put it back together and away you go.

Hi, filler plug is a pipe plug behind the seat on top of 3 pt housing. How is the parking brake? Usual problem with 74/84 series tractors is Operator drives tractor with parking brake engage and that chews up the parking brake band in the transmission and the bits get in hydraulic oil and clogs the hydraulic filter. This will also cause the PS/3PT priority valve to stick in the MCV. Caterpillar Guy told how the clean priority valve. Sometimes dead heading the loader bucket or remote hydraulic outlet will free the priority valve.
Hydraulic level dipstick is by the left foot rest against transmission case. Check with engine at about 1500 RPM, there are difficult to see hash marks on dipstick but you can overfill by 5 to 10 gal.
