Farmall regular priming cups

Hi. I am new to the forum and my 1929 regular. I have having a really hard time starting it. If I pull it I can get it started but not by cranking. I am getting spark but I think it needs fuel because it takes quite a long pull to get started. I read about putting fuel in through the priming cups and that sounds like exactly what it needs but when I went to look for them they aren't there! The valve cover is welded where the holes used to be and there are bolts in the hole where I assume tubes used to be. Is this a common practice? I would like to put some back in, does anyone know where I could find some?

The primer cups are actually for use with Kerosene. It takes a hot manifold and engine to vaporize Kero. If an operator switched a cold engine to kerosene too soon the liquid fuel would flood the engine and wet the plugs. If that happened you drained the kero from the carb and refilled it with gas. Then you filled the cups and opened them, placing a measured amount of gasoline directly into the intake. This allowed a restart of a kero flooded tractor. They were not used for the initial start on gasoline.

That being said you have an issue with your carb, or poorly sealing valves, worn rings, an intake gasket/manifold leak, or a combination of these. If everything is correct it should start easily with the crank

My dad said that when he was young they used a 10-20 to grind feed. In the winter they always used the
primer cups to get it started. Check with fordsonhouse.com They usually have them

How did it run when you got it started? If you are getting black smoke youmay have a float problem and that would cause flooding. That may take alot of pulling to clear up. oldiron29

Another item to consider is valve adjustment set at .017 or something that most don't think about is weak valve springs. They are probably the originals and cant keep valve closed or tension on valves when closed and loosing compression leading to poor vacuum to suck fuel.

It ran ok when it started and was warmed up. But I have to run it at half choke all the time and I figure that isn't right either.

If you have to run 1/2 choke you are starving for fuel. Do you have an ensign carb on the side of the manifold? If so The screw knob on top is your fuel adjustment, open it some see how it runs. If no better the center tube is blocked or clogged, It need to be clean out. oldiron29

I have a 28 Regular and have never used the priming cups, usually starts third crank. if you have mag timing and valve timing and carb
adjusted close it should start without pulling it. If it starts when pulling it and not by cranking it I would check the coil in the mag. this has
happened to me before. which mag do you have on the tractor? Good luck, Mark.

The mag is the e4a. I've checked for spark and there is spark. I have new plugs gapped to 20-25. I would check the compression but my gauge won't fit that size of a plug. But my brother in law used the finger method while I turned it and said 3 of the 4 felt ok

If one cylinder has poor compresion I would be checking Valves and or bent push rod.
Also clear the carb. oldiron29
