Looking at a 986

My brother in law has a 986 for sale that I'm interested in. It has 9000 hours on the tractor and about 1000 hours on an overhaul and clutch. The TA works as well as the AC. The SN is 2510192U21426 so does that make it a 79? It's not a tri stripe and doesn't have the pistol grip shift levers. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this model and if there's anything particular to it I should look for? He's asking $10,000 and he has all the maintenance records going back until when it was almost new. Thanks!

He's only had it 5 or 6 years, but going off the pictures of the maintenance records the water filter and hyd. oil & filter were changed every year since about 1000 hours.

If the tires are 60% and the metal is straight, the price sounds reasonable. If the hitch hole is worn oblong, or pedals have cleating worn flat, it may have more hours than indicated. Jim

its the same year as mine,i paid $9400 in 2012 for mine and my tractor has been a good runner it is due for a good paint job and hope to due it next winter as my work shop if filled up with project for this year already.

It's a little high but probably worth it since the history of the tractor is well known. I would buy a lawnmower from by BIL but yours may be ok :)

Bought a 986 five years ago at Gerdes auction. That was something I said I would never do. This tractor had 4600 hours on it and the tires had 40% of the tread left. Drawbar didn't show any wear so wondered what it was used for. Auctioneer said it was a local tractor, yea I believe you. Paid $11,000 for it. The second year I had it, started leaking diesel through the injector pump into crankcase. Took it into Injector Turbo for repairs and the guy said he had worked on that same pump 15 month ago. So it was local.

Around here that's a good price for a machine you know. I traveled a state away to buy an 886 this year. I paid 14,500 for mine with 3100 hours and the original owner. Joystick loader with forks, bucket, and spear and new rear tires. It's a cream puff and never sat out - original cab and radio delete. I love the machine and only bought it after talking with the old guy and getting a feeling as to how he had cared for it. It's such a crap shoot - buying something that's 40 years old to use everyday. Knowing its history is everything.

If everything works right and well taken care of sounds like a good price. Usually someone you know won't stick you with lemon. I've bought similar tractor cheaper but by the time you figure in parts and labor it's not cheaper and tractor had harder life than a nice local tractor

There's a lot of junk that goes through that auction. It's almost scary when he says its going to sell.

Thank you all for your input, from the pictures it looks really well cared for! So does that serial # make it a 1979?

According to Tractor Data, yes 21426 would be a 1979 model. Sounds like it has been well taken care of and probably worth the price. A lot better than finding an unknown. As long as you use it for the size it is, you should be fine. I know a lot of people don't like those 86 series tractors, but I do.
