H getting water in rear end

last winter my H was getting water in the rear end. had to replace a couple bearings so when I put it back together I silicone the bolts and put a lot of grease on the shifter. don't use the tractor much, just for my elevator. went to move it yesterday and it's froze again. what did I miss? don't think condensation would be that bad. gonna put my block heater on it and get it into shed but want to keep this from happening all the time.

Find a CV joint boot, or shifter boot for the shifter handle that covers the tower. Run it often enough to heat the oil in the summer. Jim

Go to your local auto parts store and pick up a replacement dust boot for a tie rod end. It will need to fit around the shifter tight at the base just above the spring. This will seal water from running down the shifter and cause it to drip on the bell shield and not run in the transmission.

I assume you're leaving it out in the rain? That would be first thing to remedy. If it has to live outside, at least tarp it real good. Other thing, on my H I sealed real good with silicone around each bolt hole, as I lowered the transmission cover down. Then I sealed real good under the washers / lock-washers / bolt heads as I ran the bolts back in. I know, the bolts are dead-end, but there's still a 60-year old rusty gap right there, and in my opinion it lets water seep in, then around and down. [ IMHO, those big depressed areas are one of IH's poorer ideas. ]

Hmmm, dunno. That would help. If it was me, I'd stillput some sort of sealer down under the copper. Good idea, tho.

I have a 350, which is basically a super H. I had the same issue years ago since mine sits out side a bit. I have made it a habit to drain just a bit off the bottom of the transmission every year. I always get just a bit of water out. Then during the winter if I do have an issue I have dumped in a can of dry gas. I don't know if dry gas is the correct thing to do but an IH repair man told me years ago that he did it and it works. I have only had an issue once where I dumped in the dry gas and yes it worked.

Where you get the most water is water running down the shifter handle in to transmission .

thanks for the thoughts everyone. I have my magnetic heater I will put under the rear and try to drain both plugs and will check the shifter closer. tractor don't get used much and unfortunately I don't have a spot to park it inside.
