touch control strainer

When I rebuilt my hyd pump on my Super A because I was losing fluid and gaining engine oil I found some residue in the pump. So I took out the strainer on the side and was dismayed at the condition it was in and also the crud or sludge that was in the bottom. The screen was all disformed and there is one tiny hole in its side. I washed it out with kerosene the best I could and used my finger to pull the sludge of the bottom then put it back in and added more kerosene to let it soak. Just priced them and got sticker shock! Do you think its ok to try and bend the creases out of the screen and solder that hole up? Any one been there done that? Any advice is appreciated. ...Fred

Everytime I call the dealership lately I get sticker shock. I've gotten good at making do with what I can fabricate or find used.

The cheapest I could find is $115.00 and that didn't include shipping. I didn't see any used ones on E Bay. $38.00 I could handle...Fred

The small opening at the inside end of the screen fits into an opening in the touch controll block. During assembly you can feel this go into place and the flange where the 4 bolts hold it to the block is still about 1/8" from the block. You can then feel the screen crush a little as you force it together. I think this is to get a good seal on the cone shape at the inside end. Atleast this is how mine goes together. The previous owner didn't get it right and ruined the screen. I bought a new one from Case IH for $75. That was about 3 years ago. If you repair yours be sure it seals good at the seam and at the far end of the block. It's made of light enough material that it gives a little during installation so be careful it doesn't crack open.

Although I had changed fluid I had never looked at the filter on my 1966 140 until 2002 (I am only wrench to touch it since new). It was crushed just as you describe but no holes. I unbent it carefully and got it to fit. All has been well since 2002.(This is a very light use tractor these days.) I guess it's time to change the fluid again and have another look. Glad I bought two gaskets.

McMasters - Carr sells both the coarse inner screen and the finer brass outer screen ...had to solder up a new one for a Farmall 350 ...as it was no longer available
