1086 cab- no cab

Hey guys a silly ? I am looking at a 1086. it is a vcab tractor, and I like an open station, Are they the same beast, can I just take off the cab on the 1086,1066 1456, and then add fenders?

On the 56 and 66 series you can just remove them and add fenders. The 86 series is a bit more involved. If I remember right the fuel tank is involved in what you want to do.

The cab on an 86 series supports the whole steering and instrument firewall. Open station tractors use a separate supporting frame work. Looking in the parts book will show you what it looks like. I have had a few cabs off 86 series and when it is off, the whole dash just kind of wobbles around. There may be a shield in front of fuel tank but don't remember one. We only sold two open station tractors. They took a beating if left out in the weather at all. Instruments were designed to be protected from dirt and water by the cab.

Yep fuel tank on 86 series is part of cab just below the back window. The 86 series was not offered new from ih open station. Take the doors and windows out of it. If memory serves there was government mandated rops built into the 86 series cabs. In the 70s there were numerous deaths from being squashed in older cabs if a tractor rolled over. More dangerous than open station no time to jump.

Looking in some red power posts evidently you could get 686 and 786 in open station. 886 and up required cab or rops if sold in United States. Articles suggest open air models were sold in Mexico

No, the fuel tank is totally separate from cab. Have had many, many off to work on hydraulic draft control. Cab stays. We only sold two without cab and they were the smaller models. Actually, one was a 3088 or 3288.

As far as I can remember Todd is correct. I have seen 786 open stations. The 686 was just a bolt on like for the earlier series 56 and 66. The only other large frame 86 series I ever saw open station was a 1086 and they just cut off the ROPS so it wasn't factory.

Although rare, you could get an open station 86 series. Friend has 2. H186 and 886. The platform is 'enclosed' and the fuel tank is or the rear. Both tractors have ROPS canapies. I have seen pics of open 86 without the ROPS as well.Somewhere here,I have a factory brochure that shows a 786 open wthout a ROPS The 786 was not offered with a cab.For while,IH sold a 'Taco special'(open station) 86 series in old Mexico.

A 686 is a different tractor than the other 86 series. A 686 is basicly a 656 with different numbers.

FARMALL offered an enclosed cab, a ROPS canopy, and a Non-ROPS platform. The 886 & larger tractors came standard with enclosed cabs. The 786 was available with the ROPS canopy or Non- ROPS platform. The 886, 986 & H-186 had the ROPS canopy as an option. 1086 & larger were cab only. I suspect if you leaned on your dealer and he pushed the right buttons the rest of the way up through the region & District you could get a 1086 Non-ROPS open platform.

The 686 as said was a totally different chassis, open station or 2-post ROPS only.

The TACO tractors were a sales department screw-up, not an option package.
