farmall 656 tillage tools

I have 2 questions.

1). I have 2 oliver discs modle 242. one has 9 blades per gang and measures 11.5ft across and also has single wheels. the other disc is the same model but has 10 blades her gang and measures 12.5 ft across the back. it has tandem wheels. both discs need work i like the bigger one but the smaller one needs less work. I have a 67 farmall 656 gas in good condition. which one would be the better choice.

2) I like my 3-16 3 point plow but I have acquired an oliver 5 bottom 16in plow. the last bottom could be removed. a lot of guys keep telling me to make it a 4 bottom pull it with my 656. that seems like way to much plow for a 656 but i have never tried anything bigger than a 3-16. I don't want to put the work in on the plow to make it field ready if i can't use it. I just as soon sell it to some one who can use it and let them do the work. so can a 656 pull a semi mount 4-16?

thank you

Your 656 will pull the bigger disk ok. On the plow I would stay with the 3 bottom. 4X16's would be a good load on the old girl. I used to pull 4x 16's with a 560 diesel all the time. On a 50 year old tractor 3 might be enough. All this is MHO.

Most of those Oliver plows were also adjustable in width too. So if it will not pull 4-16 then you could always make the plow 4-14 or even 4-12 for that matter. Course the downside as you go narrower is the plow is more likely to plug with crop residues.

Oliver plows were about the easiest to pull too of all brands. I have never run a 656 but we always pulled JD 4-14 with our JD 730 diesel 2 banger. The Oliver 1800 series A gasser handled Oliver 4-16 mounted plows and then later on 5-16 Oliver semi mounted plows. Dad bought those plows planning to drop the 5th bottom but we never did

What type of soil? A 3-14 semi mount in clay gets a 706 snorting and front skipping, so stick with the 3 for the 656.

The disks not sure, would think either would work.

I would prefer the 11'6" disk. 3 bottom is plenty for a 656. Remember, one more bottom will mean one lower gear.Tis better to have a plow that is a 'fuzz' too small than a plow too big and then be in low gear or pullinbg the guts out of your tractor(or both!). Be really embarassing to be slowing everyone up at plow day in first gear.Or not being able to pull the plow at all..........

We pulled 4 16s with a gas 656 but our soil had some loam. Ran in 2nd but had to torque back in red clay and tough spots. Later on they added duals and bought a 12' disk. It would pull disk in third but more than once we snapped axel clamp bolts when the disk plugged up.
