ok working on my buddies c. changing out the v-reg as the old one was shot. it was wired so the field terminal on the genny was direct to the l-h on the light switch, manually controlling charge. the new v-r is a napa vr 850. it can use the field off the genny to connect to the vr to control the charge function. also has the L terminal on the v-reg unlike the original that has only 3 terminals. connect the genny F to the light switch or connect the genny F to the v-reg? thoughts?? heres a couple pics. btw genny does motor test fine.

pic of genny with new vr. armature wire is connected, bat is connected, field wire also there, shorter wire on harness that is not yet connected

pic of lamp switch, both resisters are still there, one for cut out, one for dim, brite.

The original was a cutout only device. (it had a field resistor that was not used unless the tractor had no lights) The Light switch is comp[letely out of the picture with the new reg. Put the F on the gen to the F on the reg. Put the L to the fuse on the light switch 10 gauge wire. Put the B at to the amp gauge load side. Jim

ok, thanks jim, does the L terminal need to be connected to the fuse, or can i just leave the wire coming from the battery to the light switch and not use the L terminal on the regulator?

Yes you can do it the way you suggest but it was designed and works better if the "L" terminal is used to power thr lights and battery ignition (if used). You can use the existing wire that originally went from the "F" terminal of the genny to the field resistor on the light switch for this purpose, no additional wires needed.

If the original Field wire to the light switch is 14 gauge, it will be OK if no additional light load is applied. If it looks smaller, or freyed, I would replace it with 10 gauge because others may use the circuit more heavily. Just prudent. Not questioning Tractorman, but it is not yours, and voltage drop will be greater in the length of wire designed to handle 4 amps when 12 amps are applied to it. Jim
