SA Starter Problem

It seems I am having to replace the starter switch mounted on top of the starter on my SA to often. This last one has lasted
about 2 years but tractor is cranked once a week during mowing season and then occasionally during off season. Any ideas on
improving this situation?

You may have to replace the stud in starter that switch contacts. Other thing is a lot of the new switch's are really poor quality. I put one on a super H a few years ago and if I remember right, I finally found a good one at the Agco dealer. Deere and CaseIH were crap. Of course , it may have been old stock.

In my home town we have a starter/Generator guy that has a corner in the Machine Shop, and he is real good, but i think he gets his parts from a company that makes the good stuff, i think its Neihoff, or isn't that a good product either Pete?

Yes i agree when you tighten the terminal the stud moves so the button contac cant make good connection. Its also important to have the stud on the starter turned the correct way some repairmen get them in backwards.

If you do get the stud replaced make sure the installer knows your startersw needs to be pulled onthe SA to start. Are you sure you have the sw mounted so its a pull for the sw and the stud on the starter is on the rear of the starter. The A and B have the stud on the front sometimes those starter get mixed up from model to model.

How common is it to add a starter solenoid? That seems like a good alternative route especially if you have already switched to 12 V. Wouldn't the old Ford starter solenoids work fine for this?

Adding a starter magnetic switch (often called solenoid) is pretty common. Om that starter you still need to dismantle starter to replace the switch contact with a threaded stud. Since the procedure require same amount of assembly as replacing the switch contact it would be feasible but originality comes into the picture for many.
