Value in scrapping IH 915 Combine

Looking into scrapping my Uncles 915 combine. It has the gas engine and has been parked outside for close to 20 years. All I know is it was parked when the radiator fan went through the radiator. He since got out of farming and it hasn't moved since. Don't know if it overheated or if there was engine damage.

I want to take a few things off it for some projects, (Steering system, hydraulic motors, hydraulic pump), but was wondering if there is anything worth more than scrap value left in a combine this old. Decreasing said value, I am located in South West Washington. I bet the heavy internal parts would be worth a lot more in Iowa or Illinois than here. Shipping cost more than value?

So, if I help him scrap it, what should I save? What has value that is no longer available that would be worth shipping to somebody that needs it?

Thanks.

Check the price of scrap iron before you decide to spend a day loading it on the trailer and bringing it to the scrap yard. Scrap iron prices are at an all time low. In my area the yards are paying as little as 0.00 per ton or 20 per ton.

Unless you really need to get rid of it, leave it be. Every part right now is worth more on the resale market than at the scrap yard. I have not scrapped out a combine, but in my experience engine parts are always valuable, controls, lights and decals.

DFZ, e-mail me about your combine. Do you still have the header? Is it a high cab or low cab? Am not too far from you if you are in SW Wash. Thanks

A penny a pound here for thinner sheet metal type steel, 2 cents/lb for heavier stuff. You have to haul it there too.

Mr. Van....so are you saying if I took a Farmall Cub Tractor to "your" scrap yard, they would only pay $0.02 cents a pound for it? That is only $36.00 for 1,800 lbs (bare tractor). That doesn't sound right!

The others are right about scrap prices now, up here in Maine the junk yard is paying $55 a ton for #1 prepared iron. Not worth the trouble at that price. I would park it and wait until the price goes backup. It will eventually if the economy gets going.

There are guys that are still running them so if the combine does not HAVE to be out of there ASAP I would run an ad for parts. Since it does not have a diesel motor it will only bring scrap metal price at an auction. The last couple I saw sell had 414 diesels and rear wheel assist. One sold for 3000 and the other sold for 2600 so the value of the engine and Mud Hog. If you do not want to play around selling parts then take it to the scrap metal yard and take your lumps.

I agree , when you take the scrap check, and try to replace the fuel for your pickup, your going to be short of money.

Scrap is cheap not because of our economy being bad, but because of a stronger dollar on the world market as well as a struggling Chinese and all around Asian economy. Also scrap always seems to fluctuate with the price of fuel for reasons more complex than I understand. And scrap could well remain cheap for years, although I sure hope not since I have a couple hundred ton.
