Farmall 806 run on half choke

Started up my 806 gasser yesterday for the first time after a month, added 10 gallons of fresh gas to the 8 that was in it and headed down the road to mow, halfway there the engine choked hard and blew out some black smoke. Restarted and got it the truth feild and started brush hogging some real tall weeds and the only way to keep it running was to pull the choke half out. Got the mowing done but need to get it runing prime for the disk next week, any ideas why it runs half choke?

If that carburetor has a main jet adjusting screw you need to open it ccw. This will enrich the fuel mixture. Hal

actually have a crack on the manifold where the exhaust pipe screws in, how does that affect the motor exactly?

If it keeps running with the choke on, it is not a supply issue, it is a flake of crud in the main jet. Jim

The engine needs a certain air:gas ratio to run right.

In your case you've got too much air, not enough gas - for whatever reason.

The choke is used to up the gas side of that ratio for cold starting - but in this case since you're not getting enough gas to begin with -
upping it just brings it to the proper ratio.

As Janicholson said - could be blockage somewhere in the gas supply circuit of the carb. Or as somebody else said - it's simply adjusted too lean not letting enough gas through.

(one would assume blockage if it used to run fine and now doesn't - without any carb changes)

You mentioned a crack in the exhaust manifold... being on the exhaust side, that shouldn't make a difference with this problem - but - if in doubt run a propane torch around the whole intake area - if there are any cracks, dead gaskets, or other openings, you'd be getting too much air throwing the ratio off. The propane will mix in and the engine will speed up a bit from the fumes. (don't light the torch obviously) :)

But I'm guessing crud in the carb.

Like others have said check the manifold bolts , yes they are a real pain to do but they need to be tight . Next pull the carb off and do a rebuild and SOAK IT IN REAL CARB cleaner for a day then rinse it out with HOT SOAPY water then rinse it a couple more times in cold water the with compressed air blow out ALL the passages and make sure the main jet is clear. Make darn sure that you have a good solid stream of gas coming from the tank . Next run the valves and set them at .027 , BUT watch while your setting the valves as the rocker arms ware and make sure that the feeler gauge is where the ware area is or you will get a false setting . Next check the Ing. timing at full throttle for full advance and do not hold me to this but i THINK on a 806 gasser it is 23 degrees before TDC. . NEXT DO NOT RUN REG gas in it the min. octane for that tractor is 93 not 87.

Could the fuel cutoff solenoid be sticking shut? Happened on my 756 gasser. Finally didn't open enough to start it, when I replaced it, she started right up. Now I just take it out, clean it(needle seems to stick) and put it back -usually ok to go.
