1968 International 656 Hydro - axle Hub

Got a 1968 IH Diesel Hydro with 420 original hours on it. Unfortunately its leaking from the right rear axle. Had axle seal replaced and now its still leaking. Tractor mechanic is telling me it needs new axle because mine is warped. You can feel a high/low spot on it as it turns.... Any ideas of where I can find a used axle and Hub? Also any other suggestions of what it could be? Thanks in advance for your help! Justin

Steel Wheel Ranch;Bates Corp;Abilene Mach:Worthington;Nyssa Salvage;......Lots of salvage yards out there.I would imagine a 656 gear drive and Hydro use the same rear axle. Someone with a parts book can tell.

One of the big thins is where your at. Those axles are not light I know I put a ring and pinion in a 656 this past spring and had the axle housing off both sides and had to rig up a way to do the job with out having to lift things. I know a few salvage yards with in 250 miles of me or so that have some 656 parts but this is also in Missouri

2x on the speedi-sleeve. How do you feel the "hi-lo" did the mechanic show you this during the repair or is it felt while driving the tractor? Warped? Bent maybe.

The tractor runs and drives great. No complaints other than the leaks I am trying to get sorted out. They replaced the axle seal once and said it was fixed. Now that I sent it back to them they are saying warped axle. I went to shop to look at it, when the axle is turning you can put your fingers on it and feel it move up and down very slightly under your fingers. They say that as that moves against the rubber part of the axle seal it causes seepage that turns into the constant drip I get. Others I've talked to seem to think a warped or bent axle is very unlikely. Trying to limit my repair costs. Thanks to everybody for the help and comments. I have located another axle thanks to a previous poster, but it's $350. Thanks again! Keep the advice coming!

Also wanted to know if speedi-sleeve is something I should try myself, or just let the tractor guys handle it. I've never heard of them, how do they work?

Thx DeltaRed! I have located an axle if that is what it ends up needing. I really like these old tractors, just want to get the leaks sorted out. I have been using Hytran fluid in it, that stuff gets expensive when you have to continue to refill every so often!

I would bet it is a problem with the hub and not the axle as the seal rides on the hub. May even be a lump under the wear ring on the hub.

You have a 'Utility' tractor. These are different from a Farmall(rowcrop). Specify when ordering.....Glad to help.Steve
