Splitting Stand Ideas

Going to open up my 560 this winter just to poke around and evaluate, at least give it all a real good cleaning.

I need splitting stands - and will more than likely make something myself.

I'm hoping some of you guys could post pictures of what you use just to give me some ideas before I start fabricating.

I tend to be the "weld first, design later" type. But since I'm not pressed for time on this project, I'd like to think it out a bit first.

I never have likes splitting stand but I do use an over head I-Beam and 4 chain hoists to split tractors. Had a 656 apart this summer to install a new ring and pinion set in and had that thing in 4 or more pieces to do the job and had it hanging off the I-beam for a month or more. Ya I do use 6X6 blocks at times to help hold thing.

I just block the rear end up and use a section of metal staging with wheels to hold the front. Works for me.

Here is my version. In the picture the stands are on a Farmall H, but I've also used them on an M, so they should work on a 560 also.

we use frame rails off of a farmall H and the pallet jack. Block the rear good then run bolts through implement mount hole on the rails("feet" down) to implement holes on tractor(towards rear of splitting point), a few blocks to stabilize the front to the pallet jack good to go.. Works great for clutch work, or anything that you can leave engine hooked to front wheels/axel.

If doing a complete OH on a part we have a lift table then block under what ever we are working on, and lift the table top up. When the part is loose roll away and work from all sides.

Over head hoists are always nice to use as well. A few chain hoist to a roof joist or on a loader if don't have a fixed/ built in hoist.

Jim and Cory, I should have mentioned I'm not looking for anything simple. I'm itching to over engineer this. :) I just need a "fun" project - not often I've got the time for such a thing. And Old - anything over head isn't an option for me - wish it was!

I want something that works well enough and is built well enough - dedicated to this one purpose - flexible enough to be used even on green ones - so that I never have to dread splitting a tractor in the future.

First time with this 560, and it's a bit heavier than others I'm more used to so I'm rethinking my mickey-mouse approach. But even with others, seems any time I do this it always takes too much thinking - I end up with cribbing blocks that get in the way - front end loaders - chains - jacks - rocks - parts that can't move...

I'd like something I can just grab and go, and get right to work splitting. Something perfectly safe and secure - and allow at least one side to roll apart and back together when done.

Rusty's picture is more what I had in mind. Similar to others I've seen. Just want to try to think of everything before I start building.

Charlieu here on this site sells some FANTASTIC stands. I have them plus the TA handler and the rear frame support and they work great. Those can be used on other colors too. I would recommend you at least check out his website.

Well i built my first set and with the mod.s i have made for them over the years as the need has arisen i can split from a Cubby up thru a 1586 and yes they are heavy , no you are not just going to throw them up in the back of a pick up by yourself . The other set i have i can split up to a 4786 , that one came from a old I H dealer close out and they are factory ones . They are also a real pain in the arres to use . The one that i built is made out of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 box tubing with a 1/4 wall and are adjustable for width and hight they have two six inch steel wheels on a 5/8th axle and they are a greaseable bearing wheel.Mounting plates are made out of 3/8ths plate with a wide variety of holes to bolt to almost everything i have or will work on, The only tractors that i have never made adapters for was the bigger Fords and fro the two that i have split in the last thirty years the big stands worked on them .

I block up the rear half and use a chain hoist on the front half. But if you don't have a chain hoist then some kind of splitting stand on wheels that you can jack up and down would probably be what I would do.
