engine timing international 350 utility

The last of the four marks to come around in normal direction of engine rotation is Top dead center. Static time it to that mark and you will be in the ball park. I cannot remember which of the marks are 22 degrees before top dead center but that is the advance you want at full throttle on that engine. I just measure pulley and get the calculator out to determine what the 22 degree distance is. I could tell you on an M as I measured and marked a lot of them for fire crater but not that many 350's around.

Normal engine rotation. First notch to pointer 30 degrees advance, next 22, next 16 and last TDC like Pete said.

Turn the engine to TDC, as explained by the others.

Take the distributor cap off and note the position of the rotor.

Remove the entire battery ignition assembly (including the 2:1 gear reduction). Be careful to keep the shaft in the front completely engaged (Tilting the unit forward will allow the shaft to fall out).

Do not disturb the position of the engine while the distributor is off.

Do whatever needs to be done: change pump, do ignition tune-up, reinstall pump, whatever.

Turn the input shaft of the battery ignition unit until the rotor points the same as noted before removal and bolt the unit back on.

Recheck the timing (should be very close).

If you didn't do EXACTLY as stated, you will probably have to retime from scratch by the book.
