FARMALL H DOES NOT SOUND RIGHT WHEN RUNNING AT HALF THROTTLE

I have a H that runs great at high speeds and low speeds. when on a tractor ride and going half throttle it does not run smooth. I did a compression check and the results are 160,155,155,155, I sprayed starting fluid on the carb and intake and it did not change engine speed. You can run it wide open and it will not miss a lick. Any ideas. Thank You.

It could be the float in the carb sticking, when you have it running at mid throttle tap the side of the carb with a screwdriver handle and if it smooths out you have some work to do on the float. I had an H do this a few times after it sat for a while.

Would put a light on and check what the advance is doing to start. Unit may not be advancing smoothly.

Put the light on it was bouncing about 1/2 to 3/4 of a inch. Took the cap off and the shaft has a lot of side play. I see this sight has a bushing and shim repair kit. Is that what I need or will electronic ing. fix the problem?

The electronic ignition kit will fix the play in the distributor problem. That may be the problem not sure. The centrifugal weights in these old distributors like to rust up and not advance the timing when it needs to be. When you rev it up full throttle it may be advancing then but not at half throttle. The electronic ignition conversion will not cure a timing advance problem.

When you say it doesn't run right do you mean it starts to miss fire or vary in engine RPM?

Is it a 6 volt system or a 12 volt?

Has the engine been worked on recently?

bushing should cure your issue, with out and installing electronic ignition you would have the same issue of erratic timing trigger

when it is running at half throttle and not pulling it makes kind of a weird noise kind of like it is missing. I don't know anything about the motor because I just got the tractor. I will take the dis. apart and see what is going on in side of it. Thank you.

Check out the advance when you take it apart to fix the bushings, they should move smoothly with no slop in the mountings.

But if it continues to wear, the reluctor will bash into the pickup, or be so far away as to cause issues. Rebushing is needed for a good service life. Jim

Got her running a lot better today. I went to a parts tractor and took the distributor off and cleaned it up put in new points and put her on. The shaft has some play in it but not as bad as the other one. I will get a bushing and put in the original and change it back.
Can anyone tell me how much of a job it is to put in the bushing, or do I need to take it to a machine shop?

Bob

Distributor advance not working right. At low rpm no advance needed, none applied so it runs smooth. At mid rpm advance not coming in rough engine. Somewhere between mid and high rpm the advance overcomes the springs and kicks in and you get smooth engine. Look for advance spring kit. You want a set that are "softer than what you have. Or add afraction of weight to the weights.
