just picked up a late H ,it wants to shimmy going down the road ,My question how or what do u do to stop it from shimming THANKS TP

List follows:
Wheel bearings must be good and adjusted for preload.
Universal joint in the steering shaft can have no slop.
Ball bearing in the box where the big plug is screwed in (front) must be very good. Turn the steering wheel back and forth while looking at the point where the shaft enters the box. If it moves in and out at all the bearing is suspect.
The sector gear in the box must be good.
The key on the shaft taper must be tight.
The upper bushing needs to be tight on the upper bolster shaft.
lower bolster bushing must be good. Jim

Not disagreeing with Jim but you didn't say if you were fixing it or just wanting to make it stop shimming ? To make it stop and not fix anything just lower the air pressure in one tire and that will cause it to pull that direction and not shake, wobble,or shimmy but pull to the side.

This works nice to get a tractor home.

A common question. My H had it, I tried a few cheap-o remedies, then got serious about it, replaced the worm gear / shaft assembly, which fixed it. Plowed and disced and it's slightly back.
You have to first diagnose the problem. To do that, remove the muffler, air cleaner, hood, grill, and the 4-bolt top cover on the steering box. Have a friend / wife sit in seat, and slowly gently turn the steering wheel with one finger. Back and forth. Gently. You'll be able to see what's turning and then what's not. In my H, I had a worn-out worm gear. I also did NOT HAVE seals in the steering obx, had to replace them, which is cheap to do, but fun!!! [Different story.}
I finally replaced worm gear with worm gear / shaft assembly from this site, also replaced the two seals in the steering box, and removed the big sector gear and turned it and reinsertedit, and that fixed it. Steered tight and like a car going down the road. Drove perfectly.
Now its slightly back, and I have tightened up the top hex nut holding the big sector gear down, and MAYBE that has fixed it again. Will have to see.

Slow down. Every thing on one of my M was new or rebuilt, or good used and not worn, tires, bearings, etc. Still there. Simply slow down some and it goes away.

The sector gear may or may not be a full circle gear which can be turned. If it is a part circle it can't be turned. I think all the ones I have opened up only had the part sector. In my experience, the lower bolster bearing (just below and in front of the radiator) is the main culprit. Everything else can be a little worn but that bearing will really make them shimmy.
