Farmall H question

A friend recently bought a 1945 Farmall H. It suddenly developed a knock, that goes away when you push the clutch in. It is a loud thunk that is consistent with each revolution of the engine.and you can feel it each time it knocks. It happens in all gears and in neutral. It stops when the clutch is pushed in. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't know the H that well, but check the Clutch Joint Ring, it could have some bad rubber and loose bolts. I have an AV that does the same.

Worst case scenario is broken tooth on input shaft or countershaft driven gear. As suggested, check hydraulic pump drive by removing 2 bolts holding cover on. While there also check clutch shaft/input shaft coupler. They can make noise but is more of a tap than a knock.
Not hard to remove belt pulley (or cover) to look inside transmission.

The transmission countershaft and hydraulic pump are turning any time the clutch is out.

You can rule out the hydraulic pump by disconnecting it and dropping it out the bottom. If the noise still persists you should take the top of the transmission off, not a real easy job, to avoid doing additional damage.

My M was doing the same thing. Wasn't real loud, but definitely could feel it in the clutch pedal. Turned out to be the bolt that holds the transmission input shaft yoke onto the shaft was not tight. I discovered it while replacing the input shaft oil seal. The knock and vibrations were gone after that.

The knock could be a bearing, but not likely to make a thud with each revolution of the engine. Does the tractor have a belly pump? Does the noise continue if you are coasting with the clutch pushed in? In neutral?
