986 alternator

The owner asked me to put 2 new batterys in his IH 986 it is a 12V system with 2 12V batterys in parrlell after doing this The volt meter shownd no voltage I placed a meter on the battery and only read 12.4 volts with motor running is there any way to test the alt on the tractor?

the alternator is not charging. with tractor running you should have about 14.8 volts max. this is only a quick test. to show actual charging amps you need to load the alt. with a carbon pile and it will show you what the alt. is putting out. but regardless it needs to come off for overhaul or replacement.

My neighbor had the same problem on her Ford car and after checking her charging voltage I told her that her alternator wasn't charging. Hal

Thank you all for the replys The owner took the tractor saisd he needed it to run the auger they are harvesting corn and soybeans I told himhe would have ot charge the batterys frequently.

The output terminal and the #2 terminal should have battery voltage on them at all times. #1 terminal should have no voltage with the key switch off. With the key on the #1 terminal should have somewhere between 3 and 12 volts, most often around 6 volts. With the engine running you should see between 13.5 and 14.5 volts on all terminals. If the voltages are correct before starting the tractor and you do not see a rise in voltage after the engine is running the problem is in the alternator.
