Spooky Oil Bath Air Cleaner on 460

Hello all. Now that I've almost gotten my 460 lp sorted out, it's time for a slightly less critical, but still very important, task: The upper portion of my oil bath air cleaner, for some reason, is clearly very clogged. The engine will barely run with the bowl on it--even with no oil in the bowl! I tried running gasoline through it to wash out whatever is in there, but not much of anything washed out with the gasoline. I'm near stumped. Any thoughts? Thanks, Hugh

mud dobbers, hornet nests, and mud in general will not come out with gasoline or kerosene. did you try just hot water with some soap? That won't take care of hornets nests, but it will help with mud or caked dust.

Your SWMBO would probably kill you, but you could also put it in the oven at about 450 for an hour. That would cook a good bit of any goo or gunk out..........

Here is what I do.

Last winter I went through an M to get it ready to work. I noticed something loose in the air cleaner and turned out to be a dirt dauber nest on the CLEAN side. They got in through a torn hose in the years that the thing was sitting.

Anyway, no way to wash that out so I ground out the spot welds on the retaining plate and pulled the elements out of the air cleaner. The top third were very dirty with baked on crud that I could not remove. I tried boiling them with detergent water and soaking them in solvent and nothing was completely satisfactory other than mechanical scrubbing with a wire brush. The scrubbing revealed that the mesh was in a weak condition at this point and needed replacement.

I'm with Pete23 on this one. The best plan is to just replace the mesh. I did that on my 400D too.

Took my "H" air cleaner to car wash, set it on Hot Wash, and let 'er rip with super hot soapy blast, from all sides. Couldn't get the meah out, so I don't know if it worked or not way up inside there. But what I could see looked good.

If it is caked on oily crud, fill it with Carb Cleaner. It should soften it.
Need to then wash it out after it is softened up.

That air cleaner is off a 560 diesel and weighed a few pounds over what it should. That is the original element. I unroll them and blow and wash them. It takes a nice clean area to roll them on when done washing like a bunch of cardboard and you may very well have to roll it a couple times to get the correct nice fitting size on inside and outside of roll. I solder the spot welds that you have to grind off to get it apart. I have power washed, steam cleaned them and then just given up and took them apart.

I've taken them to a machine shop to have them hot tanked. Jut a few minutes in the hot tank, blow'um dry and they're clean as a whistle!

I did the same as pete 23 on my Farmall 460. I also cut about an inch off the bottom where it was matted together. It works great now.
