IH 574 Questions

I'm going to look at a 574 later this week and the owner says the hydraulics aren't working. I did a search on this forum and read the posts about hydraulic issues and it seems that worn brakes putting metal into the system is the main cause of problems. I stopped by the shop where I get tractor work done and asked their opinion. The owner is a big Farmall/IH guy and he gave me a great run down about what to look for with the hydraulics. His opinion is that if the system is contaminated with metal from the brakes its best to just walk away. He said the metal is almost impossible to flush out and repairs could easily exceed the value of the tractor and even then you could still end up with an uncorrectable issue. I value his input but I'm looking for second opinions. What do y'all think?

Thanks,

Scott

I'd stay away, the brakes are always a problem, the clutch is weak and poorhydraulics. Not a fan of the German diesel either

Hi Scott, you never said if it was gas or Diesel? The D-239 German Diesel engine is very durable provided normal maintenance was
done.
Re hydraulics: there is only one hydraulic pump driven by the PTO shaft from center of pressure plate. If there are no PS, PB,
3pt, remotes or pto then chances are the PTO drive teeth are worn off the pressure plate. Otherwise the hydraulics are split
into two main circuits controlled by the MCV valve behind the hydraulic filter under the left foot rest. If PS works but 3pt or
remotes don't work the priority valve could be stuck in the MCV valve. Sometimes turn steering wheel all the way until relief
valve squeals or dead heading the hydraulic remote will shock the system enough to free the stuck priority valve. Test the
parking brake to see if it holds on a slope or will prevent tractor from moving in 3rd high then the parking brake is good.
If Diesel check crankcase oil for strong Diesel smell as this may indicate front lip seal on injection pump is leaking Diesel
into crankcase.

Hope some of this helps

Boy, just the other day guys were bragging how they loved those little buggers. The brake usually sheds the linings and not metal and plugs the recirculating, lubrication pump screen and doesn't cause too bad of contamination. Any time a bearing goes out in any IH , Deere or what ever tractor that uses final drive housing as hydraulic reservoir you have contamination problems so you can see that a whole bunch of different makes and models are still being used after failures. As far as a 460 being a better tractor, that is a stretch.

Thanks for the replies. Jim & Pete your response follows what I was told this morning. It is a diesel and is supposed to run good, just a hydraulic issue. I'll go check it out on Thursday and get some more info. The mechanic I spoke to this morning said if the system was contaminated with brake liner material it would be worth a look but if the owner continued to grind the brakes then the metal could be an issue.

Have 2 674's, no brake or hyd problems ever, used all year round for all types of work. Used to always pull 3-16's all the way down in heavy ground, still no clutch issues. The other is used on the 3 pt log splitter all winter, never had a problem with the hyds either. Seen lots with MANY hours.

If the owner will let you, remove the hydraulic filter (put a bucket underneath) and give it a look. Likely you will find the filter full of gick from someone driving it with the parking brake on. You'll also find the
bypass screen on the end of the filter full of the same stuff. It's not metal, and won't cause major damage, but it will take a couple of fluid changes to get it out, and when you have it drained you will also
have to remove the entire MCV in order to be able to brush off the intake screen on the lube pump in the bottom of the transmission as that will be entirely caked too. While you're in there you should scoop
out as much as you can from the bottom of the housing. Not an expensive repair (just the cost of a couple of gaskets and a lot of hydraulic fluid) but a time consuming one.
