1951 Farmall H only has 5th gear

Greetings.

I have a good running H tractor which has developed a problem. I lost all gears except 5th gear. I've been lurking on here and found the thread about a worn shifter base. I removed the pin to look down below the shifter and found the three rails that slide the tractor in and out of gears. Unfortunately, those rails were in their correct positions. I put the shifter back in place and can move the gears in and out of their correct locations but the tractor does not go into gear. Everything 'feels' right when I'm shifting gears.

5th gear works fine and that's what confuses me. I'm stuck. So is my tractor. Anything I can get from you folks would be helpful. I'
m mechanically inclined but probably not enough to go too far into this tractor. Thanks.

Sounds like the counter shaft in transmission is not turning. Constant mesh gears bad, counter shaft to gear key problem, or just a slim chance the countershaft broke. Should be able to see problem through the belt pulley gear box opening.

I agree! Original poster should engage PTO and see if it works, or engage PTO with engine off and see if it turns.

OK, this gives me a few things to look at. I've never engaged the PTO. I've owned the tractor for about four years but just use it to clear snow and haul logs mostly. It might be a day or two until I can report back but I won't disappear. Thanks!

I agree with D Slater. Describe what happened when it stopped working. If terrible noise and nasty vibrations, not good. If no ""event"" it just quit the gears, Much better, and a possible Drive Key issue. It will still require removing the top cover on the trans, and belly pump to repair. Only 5th has a power flow that does not use the countershaft, it is direct drive. Jim

H is like M. You busted one of the input gears to the cluster gear set. Need to call your dentist for some tooth repair! 5th is direct, where the input gear is coupled to the first part that is on the top/output shaft, which is why you have only that gear speed. Power does not go into and the out of cluster gear assy, back to top shaft. Replaced the part on an MD once. Major repair. Have to split tractor at trans and one axle housing I think it was had to be loosened to get the differential out of the way so the top shaft assy could be removed. Sure not what you wanted to hear.

Never ever split an H or M to work on the transmission, top , bottom or reverse gear or removed differential to get a top or bottom shaft out. He needs to take a look inside like Slater suggested. Not likely teeth missing unless about 40 of them in a row.

Look at the Case online parts page at the link. They are saying that possibly some how the drive connection between gear #63 and shaft #60 has been lost. Possibly by key #57 (right one of the 3 shown) being sheared. I don't know how computer savvy you are but the + and - magnifier under the diagram adjust the view size.

Hello,
I looked at the parts diagram in the link you gave me.
So, the PTO engages. When the tractor broke down it didn't make any horrific noise. The gears just suddenly stopped working.

Admittedly, this looks like a frustrating situation if I have to go into the transmission to fix this. While I am capable of doing this work, I'm definitely not excited to do it!

Can someone describe where the belt pulley gear box opening is or provide a picture? Thanks.
Tom

(quoted from post at 17:09:41 11/01/15) It is directly under the fuel tank, behind the steering support.

OK, I see it. Guess I gotta take off the fuel tank now. Sigh....
