Super M pto

On my 1953 Super M, the pto slips out of gear constantly when I use it. How difficult is this to repair?

Thanks for any advice. jej

It is a fixed dog on the output shaft, and a sliding dog on the shaft from the countershaft. The most common issue is worn faces on the dogs. These are pretty easy to build up and mill flat (or slightly counter beveled) to assist keeping it in gear. Jim

With due respect to Jim the SM has a splined transmission countershaft and a sleeved tube also splined to drive the PTO when engaged. Need to pull the PTO out first. Drain oil down or place front of tractor a lot lower than the rear. Check the PTO shifter poppet and spring and condition of splines on the end of sliding sleeve and countershaft. If the PTO shifter and shift sleeve is okay but transmission shaft not. That means the transmission top, input shaft assembly and both transmission shafts need to come out to replace the countershaft.

If I need to replace the countershaft, can that be done from the back end, or does the tractor need to be split to do that? Thanks for your info. jej

I believe the counter shaft can be replaced through the top cover and removal of the belly pump or reservoir, and clutch shaft, depending on a serial number break in production. Jim
