Fresh engine overhaul

What oil have you used in your Super M w/264 engine in this situation. I am leaning towards a 5w30wt. This tractor has had the low ash oil used in the past,is this what I should use.

Your thoughts.

Thanks

winter use I see no issue. 15-40 for summer, or if you live in the less northernly or southernly areas of the world. Jim

As in first run(s)? We just put the cheapest stuff we could find in straight 30w, ran it a couple of hours, dumped it and put in a good quality 15/40, and went to town!

It's just not critical. The engines were designed in the days of non-detergent single weight oil. And they turn very slowly. Modern engines are designed to take advantage of modern oils, so they have smaller bearings and lighter construction. Proper oil use is important in modern engines but not in the old letter series Farmalls. The important thing is that they have oil in them. The distillate engines would condense a little fuel while operating, adding to the oil level with tractor fuel (whatever that was, kerosene, no. 1 diesel, etc.). The top oil check petcock was to let the excess fuel/oil mixture out. But the oil was still diluted with fuel and the engines would perform well. Try that in a modern engine.

When we did a complete overhaul we would put a little 10 weight oil on top of pistons and let it set several days before starting and put what we where going to use in crankcase (15-40). When we made first start we would let it run at a fast idle for 15 minutes before put it under any kind of load. First oil change maybe 10 hours.

Agreed.

You could fill it with vegetable oil and it'd probably still run fine for years.

Loose tolerances - heavy duty parts - low compression - low engine speed - open cool running design... it all adds up to an engine that's hard to kill.

Unless you're working it hard - all day, every day, pulling a 4+ bottom plow... Or perhaps if you use it during extreme temperatures hot or cold - I really doubt your oil choice is really going to make much of a difference.

Not to say do it wrong on purpose - but as Andy said - don't worry too much about the details, just use any quality oil, keep it topped off, do an oil/filter change at the end of every season. That'll keep it perfectly happy.
