1952 Farmall M Serial Number Start And Finish

Have couple books some have 1952 farmall m's starting at 285,xxx and some have them starting at 290,xxx what is correct?
 
Well...I suppose it depends on what you're calling 1952, the model year or the calendar year.

WHS Records show the first serial number on Nov 1, 1951 as 284158. According to what I've read over the years, November was the start of their model year. My "M" has serial number 282204 and was likely built in the 3rd week of October. The first serial number of the calendar year 1952 on January 1, was 290923
 
Jim think it depends on a persons opinion on year. Don't think IH worried about year model of the tractors. Most serial numbers are listed by first serial number built for month. Serial number breaks were used for changes to models of tractors. Think in most cases IH used the fiscal year for a models production numbers of units built. Some models started being built at the beginning of the fiscal year and others not. Really some tractors of most models were built before the official starting date. Some ended up on farms and some disassembled. Most published serial number lists go by calendar date. Published lists can be misleading though. One example is calendar date of a SM from 52 to 53. Most lists have the diesel serial number for the start of 53 year. If you have a gas SM the 53 starting serial number is actually around 8,000 or 9,000 higher.
Some of this is just my take on the subject so take it for what it's worth.
 
The M out in the shop is serial number 288XXX, and according to official FARMALL production records was built December 7, 1951.

So it looks like we have the difference between IH's FISCAL YEAR END, October 31st/November 1st, and the calendar year.

This particular M was delivered to a town about 30-32 miles from FARMALL via rail, then driven about 8 miles to the farm on December 23, 1951.
