Cub rear main seal

I'm going to be replacing the clutch in my
cub and I noticed through the inspection
hole that there's some oil in there. I
haven't split the tractor yet so I'm not
sure where it's coming from. Since I'll have
everything apart should I replace the rear
seal? How hard is it to do? Do I need any
special tools?

Once you have the cub split, pull the flywheel off and inspect your rear main seal.
I had some oil in the bell housing on my cub seal and seal housing was fine had been replace not long ago. Found the oil pan gasket had been leaking into the bellhousing.
Changed the gasket and all is dry now. oldiron29

Thanks I'll give it all a good look once it is apart. I'm just trying to figure out what I need for parts.

The "correct" seal is no longer made, and the new one doesnt fit the retainer just right, and is a little loose. You can use some epxoy to hold it in, or just silicone works. Theres some info in the archives here, but good luck finding it.

John, Like you said silicone works. I cleaned my retainer with brake cleaner wiped and dryed good installed new seal with silicone on both sides. Let it dry for a day or so and put it back together. been that way for years just fine. oldiron29

Leaking from the rear seal usually runs out from the flywheel cover at the back of the oil pan. Puddling in the torque tube many times is gear lube from the transmission. It leaks out the front seal of an overfull transmission and runs to the front when going down a grade and puddles at the lowest point in the torque tube.

For $48.50 your retainer can be machined and installed with a new seal by Tim Talleur. He goes by username tst at FarmallCub.com
