case 188 diesel timeing

when i had the injector pump off my 188D i was trying to figure out how to get the drive shaft out of the tractor, i was pushing and pulling and trying to turn it. felt like there is a big spring inside the timeing cover holding it in so i gave up. is it possible that i jumped the timeing one tooth while i was monkeying with it. now that it is back together is won't start and is smoking a lot when i roll it over.

That shaft has a large drive gear attached to it inside the timing cover, the shaft is tapered and keyed to the gear and held secure with a nut,the cover directly in front of the pump has to be off to undo the retaining nut and a puller is needed to break the taper,if you jumped a gear you will have to get it back,to check there is a timing hole behind the starter motor on the bell housing, remove the plug and line the 8° mark before TDC on the flywheel with the pointer, the engine needs to be on compression stroke on #1 cylinder,ie both valves closed on #1, the match marks in the pump should now be lined up if the gear has not moved out of time,if it has moved it will need to be moved back, there is marks on the gears but they can only be seen when the cover is off.the easiest way to change those pumps is line up the match marks in the pump before removal.do the same with the replacement and the timing will be right providing the engine has not been moved.
Good luck

thanks, the marks on the pump may be wrong because i put a new solid governor weight retainer in the pump when i rebuilt it and scribed my own mark into it when i put it on. so if the shaft had moved my marks will show it as being right. i am going to pull the front cover off and try to look at the gears, do they just have punch marks that line up like on a cars timeing gears?

There is a pointer bolted to the to the static shaft of the idler gear that drives the pump gear, one end points at the camshaft mark and the other at the pump drive mark, you need to be sure that #1 cylinder is on compression stroke, the flywheel at TDC, the pump gear mark should now line up with the pointer, go anti clock half a turn and come up to the 8° mark and the pump match marks should be lined up.
Good luck

If you want to check your new mark , apply
pressure (either air or nozzle tester)to # 1
port and you can feel the rollers start up the
cam ramp. That is your mark.
