Got a new solenoid, 2 minutes to install, clutch cut out works great. Upshift, downshift smooth as silk. Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated!!! [Reply]  [No Email]
AJ. 08-28-2012 10:55:57 92.4.154.201 Report to Moderator	Re: 1980 Case 480c Backhoe Shuttle Clutch Cutout Problem in reply to Chris up north, 08-22-2012 15:51:06   If the machine has a good forward and reverse that suggests that the pressure is OK,the solenoid has to push the dump valve open to release the pressure,if that is not happening the most likely thing is 1 an electrical problem, 2 the solenoid is loose, 3 the solenoid has failed,check to see is tight, screw it on hand tight like a canister oil filter plus 3/4 turn, put two wires on to the pig tail,ground one and put power to the other to see if the clutch cuts out. AJ. 08-25-2012 15:19:27 92.4.155.227 Report to Moderator	Re: 1980 Case 480c Backhoe Shuttle Clutch Cutout Problem in reply to Chris up north, 08-22-2012 15:51:06   I have not had to replace a single one,it is more than likely a wiring issue,with the engine stopped unplug the pig tail from the solenoid and connect a test lamp to the wiring,get a second person to press the brake with the key switched on,the lamp should light each time the pedal or switch is pressed,if not check that none of the circuit breakers has popped out, if they are OK the wiring may be chaffed or have a bad connection,you can test the solenoid by grounding one of the wires and touch the other with a hot 12 volts,you should hear it jump,keep the engine stopped while working on the machine esp the transmission as it can take off and run over someone. I also got my hands on a fluid pressure test procedure for the power shuttle. I will do that once I jimmy a pressure gauge with hose together. That should give me some good info as well. As I mentioned this machine is new to me. The cutout harness was not pluged in originally. I pluged it in, cutout worked in reverse.Posted original question. Did a bunch of work with it yesterday, now cutout is not functioning at all.????? I will mess with wiring again. Do solenoids breakdown often? Thanks [Reply]  [No Email]

On the opposite side of the shuttle from the solenoid, there is a small cap with two brass electrical contacts on it. What is that? AJ. 08-24-2012 03:03:51 92.4.130.21 Report to Moderator	Re: 1980 Case 480c Backhoe Shuttle Clutch Cutout Problem in reply to Chris up north, 08-22-2012 15:51:06   if I understand correctly your clutch cut-out works in reverse but not in forward,secure the machine and go in under neat in front of the left back wheel with a flashlight,look up and you will see the shuttle unit,on the left back of the unit you will see what looks like a coke can on its side,that is the clutch cut-out solenoid,see that it is tight,check the wires coming off it so they are not getting caught in the F/R linkage,basically how thing works is pressure from the charge pump reaches the control valve,from there it is diverted to either the forward or reverse clutch pack,the pressure squeezes the clutch discs together and drive is engaged for the selected direction,when you press the clutch cut-out button the solenoid is energized and a plunger inside pushes a rod that opens a valve in the shuttle control allowing it to dump the fluid rather than send it to the clutch,the squeeze on the discs is released and the drive is suspended,check the solenoid is tight,if so there is an electrical problem some where else. I wouldn"t worry about it, just use your foot throttle, it is the safest. Having the motor wide open and when your foot or finger slips off the switch is dangerous. I never use it. It is nice to have when using the loader in a pile of dirt or gravel. Hit the brake, cutout kicks in, use the gas pedal to throttle up and the loader operates much faster. [Reply]  [No Email]

It has the solenoid on the forward reverse shifter. I still never use it.There is a button on the floor and another one on the hyd lever. One thing about a 480 is with the same hyd pump and engine, the hyd is really fast. If they can dig it they are faster than almost anything. Same with the loader. moving cold patch away from a blender, my little 480 will lap a 580M. Shame they don"t make them anymore. Also you can haul them legal on a 15000 lb. trailer and a single wheel pickup. They just weight 10000 lb. and Newer 580 M"s weight 16000 plus. [Reply]  [No Email]
