Looking at 2 dozers about same features and both in decent condition as much as can tell. 1971 HD11B with winch for $8000 or 1971 D5 without winch for $11,000. Both 4-way blades, both open ROPS, both decent tracks and sprockets - possible HD11B better sprockets. D5 missing engine side covers. Don"t need winch - one more thing to go wrong and probably would never use it. Rear drives supposedly rebuilt on the D5.

I like Allis from collecting point, but this will be a working machine. I would not mind saving 3000, but is it worth it from parts / repair standpoint?

Any help - weak points of either machine - things to be particularly critical of would be appreciated.

The HD11 should be in a weight class between a D6 and D8. Don't know what the D5 is, but you could probably push more dirt with the AC. So far i havn't had any problems getting parts for mine, but it hasn't needed much either. Seems pretty bulletproof, but it's a 1958 vintage, not Fiat-Allis.

From what I am getting from sellers and other sources, both HD11B and D5 are about 24000-26000 pounds plus blade or closer to 28-30k with blade - the winch will add to the HD11 I was looking at, but otherwise - they seem to be similar in size

I will say however that the D5 looks like a very capable machine. I love my AC, but would certainly welcome a D5 to the stable.

From what I've found the HD is about a ton heavier and has 10 more hp than the turbo version of the D5. Add about a ton for a straight blade. I believe the D5 specs always include the weight of the blade, whereas the HD is spec'd without, being an ag tractor that often came without.

The Fiet Allis is a breakdown waiting to happen.
If you want to really use it buy the Cat. Advice from a retired 42 years service Union Equipment Operator and PROUD of it!

That is a no brainer.. First of all forget collecting the HD 11 not much value there. Dealer and parts suppot are almost non-existent. Then the D-5 will just be easier to get USEDS parts if something happens. Ten years from now I think you would be glad you bought the cat.

If you"re working it, it would have to be the Cat, regardless of the condition, from the parts standpoint alone. Whole lot easier to find a Cat dealer than a Fiat-Allis dealer. (if the stuff is even available)

When I say Working - I dont mean heavy work - I have 110 acres of land with timber planted after Hurricane Katrina - need to reclear roads and areas where it has grown up. Also need to clear a spot for new building. Probably won't see 50 to 100 hours a year.

I really like the AC line - have a HD6B - but it has steering clutch issues. I'm leaning to spending a bit more and getting the Cat D5. Seem to be a lot of them in the late 60's early 70's vintage in the 10-15k range, so parts should be available if i need them. Is $10-15k a reasonable range for a good machine?

Even found 1 advertised on Machinery Trader for $8200 (about same as the HD11B I was looking at).
Anyone know anything about that dozer / close to Lees Summit, MO http://www.machinerytrader.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=8596347&.

Probably still cheaper at $11k locally by the time you figure hauling 600 miles. Anything specific to look for on D5.

Thanks again. Ed

Don't buy based solely on price. A dozer with 75% undercarriage and everything works properly is a better buy at 11 or $12,000 than a dozer needing undercarriage and other repairs at $8000. Take someone with you that knows cats before you buy.
