Caterpillar Road Grader has no steering

Hello,

I opened up the front end of the caterpillar road
grader and found the half moon gears disengaged.
It's a fine old machine with a great working motor
and hydraulic system, but I need to get these
gears back into place. I am unsure if the gears
are too worn or they can be reset. Any
suggestions?

You will need to take off enough stuff until you can push up on the vertical steering shaft,rotate it, and drop it back down into engagement with the steering column worm. I doubt any part of that system is the least bit worn. However, it is possible that the bearing holding the end of the steering column fell apart, allowing the worm enough clearance to disengage from the worm wheel.You also need to jack up the front end and make sure that the steering arm contacts the frame before the worm and wheel travel too far and become disengaged. You need to check this carefully with the front wheels vertical, and leaned in both directions. Another cause of excess travel could be the steering arm became loose, and is jumping over or stripping the splines.
 
Why not take the gear box off and clean it up so you can see what is wrong. It is not that hard. Remove the big nut that holds the steering arm on, then support the bottom of the shaft with a heavy bar, then drive a big chisel in between the arm and the frame to pop the arm off the shaft. Then remove the two nuts at the bottom of the gear box and left it out. It is quite heavy so a hoist would be good. The shaft is in two sections with a coupling, the key may have sheared in that two!! There are alot of those old machines around so parts should not be hard to come by.
