I just got an old TD6 series 62 with d282 in it going after sitting for who knows how long. boy it rolls blueish white smoke when starting up and during load changes. dosen't miss at all. runs real smooth. But the governer seems unresposive when i throw it from wide open to idle it comes to a almost a complete stop befrore the governer revs it back up to the speed setpoint. sometimes it doesn't catch it and it dies. I let it run for a few hours and it seems to be getting better. no track on the one side so i cant drive it or see how it handles a load. is there an oil drain plug or something where maybe i could flush and clean and change the oil? or is it lubricated by the regular engine oil?

I ordered a blue ribbon manual on the pump. I am sure it will outline this "plastic ring" where can i get one. does it come in a gasket set?

ok so a gasket and seal kit is 14$ from us deisel. that comes with the plastic ring. I asked about getting the metal one and he said "29111 eid weight retainer in stock $ 48.38 each" sounds kinda expensive for a little snap ring. is it relly worth it? i mean the plastic one has lasted for longer than i have been alive

That solid retainer (#29111) that takes the place of that pellathane ring is more then just a "snap ring" as you put it. It's a pretty big and solid chunk of aluminum. Note also that the #29111 is NOT an EID drive. It is solid aluminum and I've installed many (all bought from US Diesel).

EID stands for "elastomer insert drive" and that is something quite different then the #29111 solid drive from Stanadyne that US Diesel sells.

And EID is NOT solid. It has rubber (elastomer) shock absorbers encased by steel. They are commonly used in DB2 pumps, especially for retrofit into pre-1985 cars and trucks with GM 6.2s and Ford-IH 6.9s.

Ok, so I looked at a picture of it and I see what you mean. It looks like a little drive coupling.Do you recomend i use a pelithane ring, eid, or solid aluminum coupling? My "manual” came, what a let down. I thought I was buying a service manual but it is just a 15 page addendum to a servicer manual that tells you what parts to take off of your existing pump to put onto the basic new pump that you would be provided with if you were a dealer. Doesn’t really help me at all. Just a listing of part numbers. So I guess I will search for a better manual. I really don’t want to tear into it until I have some kind of direction. As far as the dozer project is going I did put a track back on it and take it for a ride. The engine seems to run nice and responds fine to load. (I don’t have a blade on it and can’t push whith the tracks on it though) Most of the diesel smoke goes away when engine is up to temp. But if you restart it after it has been sitting for a few minutes boy oh boy does it smoke. I took off the return line and blew air through the check valve and up into the tank to make sure it is clear and it is. Guess I will just shop for a better manual for now.

I've installed the solid aluminum ring on many machines with zero problems (Case, Allis, IH, Ford, Deere, and Oliver).

The nice thing about the solid aluminum ring is that it is easy to scratch a new timing mark onto it. You have to transfer the timing mark from the old failed ring-cage - to the new one.

As to manuals - most tractor companies sold the manuals separate. But, a few AC, Ford, and Oliver manuals give all the info. My Allis Chalmers HD4 book has all the info. So does my Ford 4000 manual and my Oliver OC4 manual. Deere sold all the info in a separate manual as SM 2045. IH had it in their Blue Ribbon manuals.

If you post your email address, I'll send you info on where to get the manual in a PDF file for free.

My email is my user name @yahoo.com. not relly my user name but you get it. I bought a reprint on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Internation...3?pt=BI_Books_Manuals&hash=item4cf0f3e84d
it has the info i need but print quality is poor and pictures can be difficult to make out. I'm still not sure what i need. the crawler runs smooth, doesn't miss, starts up well but smokes diesel smoke like a chimmney. it is kinda comical because when i fire it up it is just a round coulum of bluish white smoke 3'-6' in dimeter that fills the whole property like a forest fire. drives the wife right back in the house if i see here comeing  i guess i will just throw some seals and gaskets at it and see what happens.
