John Deere 450-C steering clutch question

I have a 450-C that the steering brakes are weak. It barely works on one side, and not at all on the other. The clutches do release, and if it's against a load it does steer. I"m assuming the brakes either need adjusted or maybe are worn out? I"m new to these machines and don"t have a manual yet. How do I adjust the brakes? I figure thats the best place to start.

You"ll need the service manual to get a few key details about the adjustment like lever free-play distance and number of turns to loosen brake bands after you"re done adjusting linkages. When you adjust the brakes, you also adjust the steering clutches and steering lever free-play all at once, so you need to do both sides at the same time or the brake pedal may not engage both sides at the same time. I have an older 450 with dry clutches, so I"m sure it"s a little different than mine, but the adjustment should be generally the same.

The 450C is totally different than a 450. When you move the steering lever you are working a hydraulic valve, it"s not a mechanical connection to the clutch.

On the side of the steering clutch housing above and forward of the final drive , you will find a 3/4" square recessed plug there.. Take out that plug and you will find a brake adjuster wheel similar to one found on a car..You will see it with a good flashlight..It is adjustable with a screwdriver.. Hydraulic tank side; turn the wheel by pushing down on the screwdriver , turning the adjuster wheel clockwise.. On the battery side turn the wheel clockwise too by pulling up on the screwdriver handle , turning it clockwise also...Turn each a couple of clicks each , replace the plugs and try it..You may need to do it again till it feels right..
