finally got around to bolting cleats to new chain. Bought all new track bolts from JD dealer. 3/4" air impact wrench putting'em on with 150 lbs air & heads snapped off. Made in Italy, same as sprockets & chains. Book says imact til they don"t turn, Then breaker bar another 3/4 turn. Mechanics say THEN smack bolthead with heavy hammer & twist again. Either way, no way is the impact wrench supposed to be able to break boltheads off. Buddy watched threads & socket while I turned"em on. When the threads stopped but socket kept turning he stopped me before they snapped. All would"ve broken. Anyone else run into soft bolts?

WHAT ?????? How big are those bolts ?? 9/16 or 5/8" at the very most...A 5/8" bolt torques to 275 ft.lbs. ..How much torque is that 3/4" impact putting out ?? Most are 500 ft. lbs. or more... I don't believe they meant tightening with a 3/4" impact..More like a 1/2" gun..I haven't done any G series tracks yet , but all the 450-C tracks I've done torque to 85 ft.lbs.[1/2" bolts]..I've had no problems with track shoes loosening ..I clean the paint off any new rails or shoes with a big angle grinder and a cup brush...

Cat specs. call for the torque turn method and that's what good track shops use. Bolts are torqued to a specific torque value and then turned an additional 1/3rd of a turn. Master links specify a 1/2 turn more. I couldn't turn mine a 1/2 turn more. Initial torque; D3 9/16" bolts 65 ft. lbs. +- 15 ft. lbs., D4 5/8" bolts 120 ft. lbs. +- 30 ft. lbs. It also says to lubricate the bolts with anti-seize. Any bolt will snap under too much torque. A 3/4" impact is way too much for a 550. A D10 with 1 1/8" bolts only calls for 650 ft. lbs. initial torque. I think you got a bunch of very wrong info from the dealer and/or the mechanic. Air impact's aren't the most accurate either. I'd be getting the dealer to replace the broken bolts. Dave

Gun is Farmhand brand sold by TSC. Made in Taiwan so not the most powerful by a longshot. 5/8ths bolts. I followed the procedure in the JD owners manual & instructions that came with the parts. Noticed that next-door neighbors 550G is missing about 1/2 of its track bolts.

All Deere undercarriage has been made by Berco in Italy since some time in the 80's I believe. I toured the Dubuque plant a few years ago, but don't remember exactly when the guide said they stopped manufacturing their own undercarriage.
