3204 Cat water pump and alternator ?

Last year the big nut that holds the pulley on the water pump of my 931B came loose. I took the water pump off and tightened the nut but didn't use any loctite. It was good for a while but I noticed that it's loose again. Should loctite solve the problem or should I just put a new water pump on? The water pump only has about 1000 hours but is a jobber pump. Would a wobbling pulley make any difference in charging the battery? The amp gauge doesn't hardly move, even after starting. I boosted it today and it still didn't move much. I'm also wondering if the battery could be going bad and that's what's causing the charging problem. The battery is about 5 years old but was a reconditoned battery. It's a pain to replace the battery but I want to make sure that it's the problem. It's an 8D battery and I paid $80 for it. A new battery was at least double the price so I'm not complaining about getting 5 years out of it. Thanks. Dave

The first thing I would be doing before the fan goes through the rad is repair the pump, you need to take the hub off and see why it won"t stay tight on the shaft,is the key still intact,is the hub wallowed out,is the shaft damaged, there must be a reason why its coming loose, have you something to hold the hub while you torque the nut,use loctite on the nut and bearing lock in the hub. With the pump done connect a volt meter to the battery terminals, note the reading, start the engine and go to about 1500 rpm check the volt meter,if the alternator is good it will be reading 14 volts plus,if its not you got a charging problem and a new battery won"t cure it,as soon as it goes down you will be back at square one,you could test the battery if you got a tester,or charge it from another source and see if it starts the loader then, new battery or old battery the machine has to be charging to keep the battery up.

I have to take the pump out to tighten it. There are flat spots on the shaft at the impellor side for a wrench. I tightened with an electric impact wrench before. Any idea what would make it come loose? Dave

There could be several reasons why it came loose in the first place, not tightened to the right torque, overtightened and cracked the hub,hub not a snug fit on the shaft, have a look when you get it off, usually when pulleys comes loose means that they are not a snug fit on the shaft, use a torque wrench to tighten the nut rather than an impact wrench, impact wrenches are ok for pad bolts and wheel nuts but not for engine parts which should be tightened by hand.

My impact wrench isn't real strong. I didn't notice the flat spots on the shaft, that's why I used the impact wrench. It was a cheaper water pump when I bought it. I'm thinking I might be better off, just putting a better quality water pump on? The engine and rad are both rebuilt. I don't want to screw them up because of a bad water pump. Dave
