855 Cummins Trouble

Looks like the wrist pin bushing failed on my Big Cam 3 Cummins. I've not tore it completely down, but sure looks that way.

What are some causes for this? I'm not sure if it's worth fixing and I'm concerned that others may go out after I fix this one.

I don't mind spending $2,000 on a piston and liner if it will fix it and get another 20,000 miles, but not if the rest are about to go as well.

What do you think I should do? Suggestions? The old truck is not worth more than $5,000 tops.

The odds are in your favor that the rest will be okay. This engine is not noted for wrist pin failures. They have other problems but not wrist pins.

It's got a knock in the top of the bottom and in the center (at least it sounds like it). I took the valve covers off and everything looks good. The noise doesn't sound like a rod bearing as it's not coming from the bottom. It starts and runs fine, doesn't smoke, has power, but knocks loudly (it's not a peck) that speads up with RPM's. I was pulling a big load up a hill and when I topped the hill it started. The engine is not turned up at all. I did put some diesel fuel conditioner in it when I filled the tank for the trip. Used Lucas at around 1.5X normal rate at I had a injector that wanted to stick occasionally.

One other note. Sometimes the truck would smoke if I geared down for a stop. It would clear up as soon as I put the clutch in or took back off. It did this rarely and I assumed it was an injector sticking. The engine used a little oil maybe maybe a gallon in 2,000 miles.

Any thoughts?

What other problems should I be on the look for? I hate to spend much on an old truck if there are significant issues.

H2,

A bad nozzle will burn a path down thru the
piston and weaken the piston pin bore. Rod will
pull the pin down out of the piston. Over the
years I have had 2 engines do this , several
years apart. One the block survived , the other
one didn't. I both cases the pin bushing was
still good.

Check the piston cooler nozzles, they are on the right side about where the liners would stop. there are 6 of them and they come out the outside with just one 5/16 bolt and pull them out. They are plastic and they do break off
