Open hose on backhoe?

I posted a few days ago but didn't get a response. I hope someone can help though. My quick attach backhoe has a small hose on the control valve that is open to the environment. I think it's some kind of vent hose but not sure. It did have some oil come out of it but not continuously. Can someone tell me the purpose of this hose? Thanks Dave

Dave, I am unfamilier with the cat. backhoe, but it seems to me that it needs to be plumbed in there some where. If its a bypass/vent hose of some sort then it must go into the tank somewhere or into a (tee) leading back to the hyd. tank somehow. Did it just start or has been like that for a while? If it is a vent hose, maybe a one way check valve has come off. sorry I couldnt be more help! Good luck! Larry

It's in a bracket and only a small(3/8") hose. It doesn't normally leak. I thought it might be another safety device or something to protect the hydraulics but aren't sure. Dave

Dave, I feel that your on the right track, maybe you can take a vent tube cap off a old rearend at a junk yard or some thing and install it on your hose.. If I am not mistaking, a ford one ton rearend has 3/8 hose that comes off the rearend and mounts on a bracket on the frame of the truck that allows pressure out and keeps dirt, moisture, and dirtdobbers out as well. My service manual shows a "protective relief valve" in the sectional valve exhaust circuit set at "about" 1,000 psi and says it is designed to protect the system in case the return circuit is stopped up. I assume this includes having the return quick disconnect inadvertently disconnect. The pictures in the manual show where the hose is connected to the valve exhaust block, and show it disappearing down into the frame, but don't show where the lower end stops.

The parts book is not very clear, but it appears to just be a small hose that hangs down and is not connected to anything at the lower end. Guess they want you to know there is a problem by spraying fluid all over the ground.

Thanks. I thought it was something like that. It has a clamp that it goes through and just hangs down. Dave
