Can weather make cylinders leak?

When it was a little colder in the spring I had a few of the hyd. cylinders on my Cat start leaking out the end cap. The 4 in 1 bucket cylinders were the worst. It really came out when I closed the clam. I use a multi-purpose hyd. oil that meets the Cat spec. but was told the wrong oil can make them leak and I might want to change it. Now after putting the new undercarriage on and trying the machine out, the cylinders don't leak at all out the end caps. It's one of those things that make you go HMMMM! Any thoughts or ideas? Dave

Absolutely, heat makes the seal material more pliable, seen many cylinders that leak when first started using them then the oil and machine warms up the leak stops. Your just on the borderline of a full time leak tho'.

i worked with a big komatsu once, it would leak even in the summer until the chrome warmed up and expanded and i've seen the finals on dozers and excavators leak a little on real cold days just sitting in the yard

That may have been the problem. The barrel of the cylinder was hot but the shaft was cold because it was exposed to the cold weather. I'll have to keep an eye on it. Are Cat cylinders a big deal to replace seals in? I've done smaller cylinders and hope I don't have to do the big cylinders on the hoe. They weigh a few pounds are are fairly long. Dave
