John Deere 350c Reverser Problem I Think

I have an early 70s model 350c. The other day I was pushing some dirt and the clutch pedal felt like it hung about halfway up. I pushed it up and down a few times and it started releasing all the way but on the next push with the machine, once the blade was loaded, it just stopped pushing. It will still travel in both directions but when trying to back up a small incline it wouldn't pull. I managed to get it of the hole it was in and checked the fluid in the reverser, it was low. Thinking that was the problem I topped off the oil and tried again. Still the same thing. How do I check the fluid pressure from the reverser? Could the problem be the pump in the reverser or could it be something in the valve body on the side of the reverser since the clutch pedeal was sticking? If I have to go into the reverser, is it best to pull the engine to get it out or go at from the back? Any and all advice will be appreciated and thanks in advance. Barry Sims

OK, checked the pressure today and forward and reverse readings are 50 psi. Stays the same no matter what RPMs are. Now, where do I need to go from here? Oil levels in the transmission and finals are not increasing so I think I can eliminate any blown seal but not sure. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks for all your replies and I am sure I will need more answers in the near future.

I was hoping that it was buildup around the linkage and spring but I pulled the floorboard and everything was clean and had full travel. I will check the pressure this weekend. What is it supposed to be. On another forum one guy said 220 psi but everything I have read says between 120 and 130 psi. Thanks again.

As I already wrote - 120 PSI was the standard for older reversers. But, when the C came out, the pressure had to be raised to keep the steering clutches from slipping - absolutely no higher than 150 PSI. The reverser itself - if there's nothing wrong with it - can work fine at 120 PSI - just as all the 1010s, 350s, and 350Bs used. But, the C steering clutches need some extra pressure or they slip.

To remove the reverser, you pull the engine out.
To check clutch pressure - there's an 1/8" pipe-plug down by your feet on the left (acutally, there are two). One is low-pressure lube/clutch-release and should be 20-30 PSI. The other is main clutch pressure and needs to be over 130 PSI. The older 350s ran around 120 PSI. But, when the C came out - the reverser got hooked to the new "wet" steering clutches and the pressure had to be jacked up. We has some new C models that we had to jack the pressure up to 150 PSI to keep the steering cluthes from slipping. In regard to the clutch-pedal - 350s are prone to getting sticks, dirt, and rocks jammed in there. Also, there's a big spring on the clutch pedal that is often stretched and causes a problem. Take the floor-boards off and check the spring - and for dirt and debis. We had many problems with the c series clutch-packs leaking - and then the reverser fluid would leak into the clutch housings.

I think they had a problem on some of them where a seal would go and allow the reverser oil to leak into the final drives which could cause more problems due to overfilling of the final drives. It might not be your reverser. Sounds like it could be your clutch. Dave

I had similar trouble with mine once and it turned out that there was some wood and dirt accumulated around the 'clutch' linkage. Before I jumped to any conclusions I would pull the floorboards and check pedal, linkage and lever at the valve housing.

After checking all the relief valves and bypass valve, 50 psi is still all I can get. My next question is do I need to rebuild the reverser clutches or just the reverser pump? It appeared to pull fine in both directions before this problem started and the shifts apper to be ok. Looks like I can get the parts from Deere for the pump but is there a cheaper place. Also where is the best place to purchase track chains? I guess I will tear it down this winter and repair a lot of things that need to be fixed. I also plan to look at the winch which has never worked since I have had the machine. Should be a great learning experience. Going to have to clean out the shop to make room for a longterm project. Thanks for all your replies.
