I have a International 3082 backhoe attachment that is a 3 pt. hitch style that I am trying to sell. A guy is interested in it for his John Deere tractor with rear hydrualic hookups and wants to know if it is has a closed center in it. Is this backhoe for a closed or open loop system ? What is the difference ? And can it be converted to either system ?
Thanks
Dennis

heh, thats why I said I "believe" LOL I was way off. Learned something there. Most hydraulics arent complicated but stuff like that sure can be!

Wouldnt Case/IH dealer know that just by the model and look it up?

Open center means full flow no pressure. Closed center means full pressure no flow and usually uses a variable displacement piston pump. Open center can also use a variable displacement pump. Don't try the hoe out on any tractor until you have a qualified hydraulic shop look at the valve. Some valves can be converted. Someone with IH experience might be able to tell you what type of hydraulics the hoe is for. I would think probably open center because it is a 3 pt. hoe but don't take my word for it. Dave

His tractor does have var. displacement pump. If the backhoe has an open center, couldn't he put an inline releif valve that is also adjustable for pressure in the inlet hose (pressure) going to the backhoe . That way he would not loose any system pressure on his tractor, which is what he is concerned about. His tractor is running 2500psi and is JD 3010. Isn't the whole idea of a closed center valve to maintain constant pressure with 0 flow. So if the inline releif valve is adjusted to approx.2500 psi he would have constant pressure to the hoe with minimin loss to the system of the tractor.

Thanks Guys
Dennis

I beleive closed means it has its own hydraulic pump driven via PTO or other means (like electric or belt etc). Open means it uses the tractors hydraulic pump.

One would want closed if their tractor had a wimpy pump OR if they didnt want to have to up the RPM of tractor engine just to use the backhoe at good speed (again week tractor pumps work slow). You need a failry high gpm pump to run a backhoe right. I know our 2500 IH constructal has no problems with the backhoe. But I seen some that are SLOOOOOW as heck due to mismatch on the gpm needed.
