I'm going to look at a 450 dozer tomorrow and would like your opinion. I checked with case and the model is early to mid 70's. I'd give the ser#, but I don't have it with me. Going by what the owner is telling me. Machine works good and has no leaks. It will spin tracks under load. It does have the 188D motor(about 40hp as best I can tell). New, wet rails and pads. New lower rollers and sprockets. If it's what he says, and isn't to bad beat up, is it worth $12,000. Let me thank you in advance.

What series would that be? I've been looking recently at some Case 450C's---low-mid 1980s vintage- generally either side of 12 grand and up. Dealer might have a 450B coming in from the late 70s- no price mentioned yet. Granted, UC is the big thing, no matter the age, but I've been looking for an older machine for fence line removal, pond work, driveways, etc. and it seems that most machines available are either late model or almost antique. Are all the 25-40 year olds still out there working and not for sale? Also, some have Case diesels, some have Cummins- comments on that? I know that Cummins is great, but how do the Case diesels stand up? Had a 2470 Case farm tractor, replaced the 504 with Cummins 855- fantastic power, and especially torque.

Serial # shows this unit to be a 1973 model. I went Friday and run this thing. It has a miss on one cylinder, but I'm hoping that is an injector or can be cleared up with a valve adjustment. The old thing runs pretty good though. Will spin the new pads in good dirt under a load. Oil psi is about 60 when warm according to guage on dash. Blade not to bad worn either. It looked like the tilt plates (Banana plates) on the back of the blade had never been off. As far as I know the Case 188 is a pretty good engine. Someone had posted that the #3 rod sometimes came through the block. I guess anything is possible. As for the Cummins, if it's in a Case I think it's refered to as a CDC, Consolidated Diesel Corporation, but it's a cummins diesel. It's hard to beat a Cummins in my opinion. If you can get one with the Cummins and it's in your price range buy it. I'm not sure, but I don't think the Cummins was in the 450C. Also, would anyone know the weight of the machine and the HP of the 188 in the 450. Case dealer says it weighs 14,000# and his book dosen't give a HP for the 450, but it does show 40 Hp for a 188 in a Backhoe

I think the original 1845 uni-loader used a 188 diesel. Dave

I talked with a guy that had 3 450's. He said they were a good machine and way better than a JD. Berco undercarriage is top of the line and NOT CHEAP. Even a lower end complete undercarriage could be $6-$8000. $12,000 seems reasonable with a new undercarriage as long as the drive train is good. Sounds like it is. Check the steering as well. Dave

The Case 450 is a good little dozer for the money. Big enough to do serious work and small enough to be manuerverable and good on fuel.

The 188D is a reliable engine. Watch for blow-by as a sign of a tired engine. I'm told that the #3 con rod is usually the first thing to go, resulting in a new block "window". Usually the hole is not in a serious place and can be brazed up, but better to rebuild before the engine lets go.

What you get should depend on what you plan to do with it. The 450 is durable but not a real "hoss". I found that my 450 loader would have to work prety hard to knock down moderate sized trees. It comes down to a trade off between inital cost, operating cost and time to complete a project. In other words I was able to clear a nice area out of the woods for my house, but it took awhile and both the 450 and myself were pretty tired at the end of the day.

Parts are pretty easy to get. Your dealer probably does not stock most parts, but can order and get them in a reasonable time. Parts cost are pretty good compared with Cat I guess, but even routine things like hoses can get pricey fast.

If the undercarriage is fresh, all gauges working and showing proper operating range, engine in good shape with little or no smoke, then yes $12K is about right.

Remember that even my old loader looks good right after a power washing. Check the color/condition of all fluids. Ask when they were last changed. Check the hour meter and ask if it is true. The 188 should start right up.

Best of luck,
John

John,

I have an early 450 loader / 188D / #3 rod through the block, etc. I can tell you, firsthand, a Case 450 is one tough little loader. It will remove big trees too. You need to undercut the root system first. On the bigger trees you need to cut on 3 sides and then push them over. Never had any problem some took longer than others. I paid 5500 for mine in '98 -it's getting a rebuild this spring. They are the best bang for the buck for cleaning up fence rows, etc.

Thanks John for your input. We'll mainly be using it for work around the house. We've got some cutover land we would like to clean up. As for pushing trees we've already got a 580 Super K that could be used to dig them up if it gets to serious. I worked on case equipment for 7 years and I think I know what to expect, I just wanted to post here and get a "second opinion". The #3 rod you say. That's the first I've heard of that.

If it's spinning tracks it aint worth twelve grand. New chains alone are gonna cost you at least three thousand and thats not inluding tensioner units or installation. I would offer him six and expect to spend around six to bring it up to snuff. Unless of course you can do the work yourself and know of where to track down cheaper replacement parts like berco parts. I think that would be a lil more fair option. I got took on my crawler. Knew nothing about it when i bought it for twelve and spent about six grand replacing the undercarriage. good luck brah.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. The machine has new rails and sprockets as well as lower rollers. It will spin the tracks on the ground. Hoping this means the engine and transmission are in reasonably good shape and not that he was in mud when he was doing the spinning. I'll be looking for myself tomorrow.
