How much is a TC 5 log skidder worth? It has been sitting out for 4 years, the motor is locked up, tracks and tires fair. He wants about $500. It could be a later model IH SKIDDER, he is not sure. It has the blade, canopy and winch. How usefull are they? How much dirt will they push? Will smooth tires work in the back instead of the lugged original ones? Thanks!

hi guys as far as the value of the tc5 in poor running condition is around 2500. to "good" 5000. there were only 800 made as skidders and most are like you find, stuck or parted. mine is only a gas , and will push a full blade of dirt ,rock , or whatever gets in its way with no problems at all. there is a shot of it here in the gallery under skidder.

TC 5,

I have a TDC-5 skidder (the diesel version). I purchased it in Maine about 3-4 years back for about $1,500. However, it runs great. In addition, the Gearmatic 9 winch was just rebuilt (new friction material), so it was ready for action. That being said the $500 target you mentioned may not be bad given the state of the motor.

Regarding the drive tires. I have don't have the original grooved tires on there anymore. The set I have big lugs, which catch the track and carried it around. I can tell you with experience that smooth tires are a detriment. This is particulary true when you are hauling logs in wet conditions up hill. The tires WILL spin. You'll get there, but you'll spin and wear the tires more quickly.

Where are you located? How are the tracks? As mentioned above, these are not easy to come by and I'd be interested to check it out for those.

It's always nice to hear that there are others of these things around. You don't see them often (or at all).

Regards!

TC-5, That is a very rare unit, there wasn't alot of them built. The TC-5 track skidder was based on the T4,T5,TD5 crawler models built between 1959 & 1964. The track skidder was actually a series B model built after 1963. TC-5 was gas ( 135 cu.in) TDC-5 was diesel ( 144 cu.in).They were basically the crawler chassis with the tracks & track frames replaced with rubber tired drive wheels, bogie wheels & alpha track chains. They were carried on in 1965 as the 500 model but not sure for how long. They had a decent winch (Gearmatic 8A)& the blade was a straight dozer version of the bullgrader unit used on the dozers. The hardest part I would think would be coming up with parts for the alpha track chains if you ever needed them.

These machines do exist, only been around the small one cord capacity units, as stated bald tires will work, look at the machine from the side and you notice they are frontend heavy, and when loaded the weight is on the rear end, a balancing act.
A stuck[ but was running good prior] has some value diesel more so than gas, the winch is important! it might be a "gearomatic" unit, chain driven/friction pad operation. Most troublesome unit i found on the machine here, but at the same time the same winch sold for your machine price as parts.
Depends if you plan to work it or part it out, might be more value in parts[ not that it is the best answer] parting out could well involve more time to do so.
as said great for logs and brush and even with a snowplow added, they tend to be awkward and a LAST choice of machine around operators here:)
hope it helps

I have JD 440 skidders, never saw a IH skidder. I do know that log skidders are not made to move dirt. The blade is there to pile logs and move brush piles. If you are pulling logs and you have them up close to your log arch the rear tires (bald) will work. Forestry tires are more expensive then farm tires. Make sure the winch is working before you spend too money on the machine. mike cain 607 796 0394
