My father has a Mitsubishi BD2G dozer. 1600 hrs, runs great. I wonder what kind of oil and how much the transmission and clutch hold?I had the floorboard out of it and there are 2 dipsticks: one where the clutch is and then another at the transmission. The trans was full and clean but the clutch (I'm assuming this is what is called a "wet" clutch) was a little low. What type fluid does it call for and how much will it hold? I have no manual.

Sorry, I didn't read carefully enough.
Capacities in liters
Clutch case (straight drive) 5.5
Damper (clutch) case (power shift) 0.9
Transmission (straight drive) 9.5
Transmission (power shift) 11.0
Bevel gear case 7.0
Final drives (each) 6.5 (std. tracks) 9.5 (swamp tracks)

John,
I just had a BD2G delivered at our property 400 miles away, and in the day I had to look at it, cannot find an access to or a dipstick for the powershift damper clutch (inching pedal?) you mentioned. I picked up the service manual and don't see anything in there either. At the risk of sounding like a dipstick myself, where the heck is that little dude? I'm heading up this weekend to do more servicing on it and could use the info. Thanks for the capacity info too, I was ready to check my finals and bevels before the 10 mile trek into the land. Thanks,DRM

I'm assumming that you have the powershift transmission. If so, both the transmission and the damper housing (clutch housing, but the actual clutch is not in there) call for a SAE 10W motor oil, API class CD. The same for the hydraulic oil. When I looked into crossing this, the best I could come up with was a 10W oil meeting the CAT TO-4 spec. These oils are readily available. Also, there is a thread here advising not to use US motor oils in these applications because the detergent additives wreak havoc with hydraulic systems, putting us back to the TO-4 oils.
On the other hand, if you have a straight drive tranny, use the 10W TO-4 in the clutch housing (now it has a clutch), and a 90W GL-4 in the tranny. Also, the bevel gear (differential case - Yes, I know there is no diff in there) and final drive housings use 90W. (80W below freezing or so).

A long-winded reply, but I hope it helps.
John

John, I have the direct drive tranny. What the heck is TO-4 10W oil? I was told by Jay at Rhine Equipment that the wet clutch calls for SAE 10W motor oil and he was reading out of an operators manual. I was worried about being able to find motor oil that thin and now you suggest that isn't good for it and I need 10W TO-4. What should I use and where am I likely to find it? Thanks for your reply.

Greg,
TO-4 is a Caterpillar specification for oils used in powershift transmissions and hydraulic systems. There are other 10W hydraulic oils out there, but they may not have all the additives for the transmission. The TO-4 oils are not hard to find. I'm using Phillips 66 Torq Fluid, because our local oil distributor handles Phillips. I know that Exxon and Texaco have similar products. You are correct in stating that the manual calls for a 10W engine oil. However, it would appear that there is a difference between the engine oils available here and those available in Japan. It mainly has to do with detergent additives. There was a lengthy thread on this subject in this forum a week or two ago. However, it you have a standard shift transmission (shifter comes out the floor, not the left console), it uses plain old 90W. The clutch housing and the hydraulic system uses the 10W. I say go with the TO-4 for your 10W needs. You may find a less expensive 10W for the hydraulic system, but the TO-4 will cover everything, allowing the use of a single product for the transmission (power shift), clutch housing, and hydraulic system. I understand your frustration. I went through the same thing around the first of the year, and this is what I came up with.
BTW, on another subject, I would suggest that you pull the covers over the steering clutches (Two flat plates, about 4X12, under the seat), and check for rust. I you find much in there, pull the clutches and clean them up. You just might save yourself a big parts/repair bill if you catch it in time. My clutches were already partially stuck, and I had to replace everything. Ouch.

Hope all this is a little clearer than mud.

John

Thanks John. I understand now. My clutch reservoir is all that was a little low. My transmission is standard (not powershift) and it is full and very clean. I guess I will need to go to CAT or an EXXON, Chevron or Phillips distributor and get my 10W TO-4. Never seen this stuff in an auto parts store. As for my clutch plates and rust, I have never pulled them and looked for rust but I will. I'm curious. My dozer runs absolutely awesome. It doesn't have much power like some big dozers I've run and that's hard to get used to but it works great for it's intended purpose. Hydraulics are strong, tracks are nearly new, and clutches operate smooth as silk. Thanks for the help.

Greg,
I expect that most any heavy equipment dealer will have a 10W oil available.

John
