How do you adjust the steering clutches on a jd 420 crawler?

Thanks, Boyd

There is a hole near the top on the front of each clutch housing, covered by a screw-in barrel bung. Remove it and look in there with a flashlight. You should see a 3/8 bolthead (9/16 wrench size) that is over a slotted collar. When you loosen that bolt you're supposed to be able to slide the shaft inside the collar to adjust the clearance between the throwout bearing and the clutch fingers. I think it should be about 1/16". I say "supposed" because mine needs adjusting and the collar is rusted tight. I'll pull the track and final drive sometime this summer. I suspect mine is at the end of the takeup and I'll need new clutch discs.

Boyd, This might not be 100% right but it should be close enough.1st thing find the two covers on top of final drives, next after getting to adj nuts , the one that gives you free play should be adj so the lever travels aprox 1 inch or so before it starts to take pressure off of clutches. Then aprox. 6 inches you want the brake to engage, Thats the bolt adj with the lock nut on it.When it's right you should be able to pull back on handles a bit and dozer should coast to a stop , Then all the way and brakes would kick in.If I was you, I'd get a manual on 420 and it will tell you step by step. Good luck, Fasteddy
