Ford 4500 Backhoe

Good evening all,
I recently purchased a 4500 Industrial Tractor / Backhoe. I purchased knowing that it has transmission issues, previous owner said that he could use it for about 20 minutes, then it would quit moving. When I went to pick it up, I moved it about 100 feet and then it quit moving. I do have the owners manual on the way, so I at least know where to check fluids and what the correct type is etc. I did loosen the line coming from the top of the transmission that goes to the filter, it was moving fluid when running.
Any other thoughts on things I can try/ look for before tearing into the transmission?

Thanks,

Start by getting a service book. Do you have a torque converter? If so, you will need to do some pressure checks by the book. Then you will know what to take apart.

You didn't say what transmission you have.. If a Selecto-Speed, good luck. There is a ton of clutches and drums inside that case. Very quirky snap ring seals. I won't do another. If it's a 4 speed with direction reverser, there is a pressure tap up inside the engine clutch housing that you can tie a 200 lb gauge with a hose so you can read pressures while being seated and operating controls safely seated. That pressure tap is a steel pipe routed from the pump housing around the trans input shaft and visible from underneath the machine. Just take off the steel panel right below the clutch area. to find it.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it! It looks like I need to figure out how to do some pressure checks. This tractor is honestly going to be a low priority project. I was hoping for something simple, but we'll see how it goes. I'll post progress as it happens!

Thanks,
