1989 JD 550G dozer won't move in 1st, 2nd or 3rd, in forward or reverse. Runs great in 4th fwd & reverse but of course that's too high a gear to do any work. Last guy to run it said you might have to wait 20 minutes til it went into any lower gears but I've never been able to get it into any lower gears. When you engage any of the 3 lower gears the dozer shudders but does not move & the engine labors down. Service manual is on the way. Need to know what kind of gauge to buy, brand, size? Where are the ports to test? Anyone got ideas? It has the 'inching petal' on the left side so I think it has a torque converter, not direct drive tho I may be wrong on that. It will run downhill or on the level in 3rd but a 1% slope stops it. I hadn't started it in 2 years til yesterday but it acted the same when I shut it down 2 years ago. The engine fired up instantly.

The 550G needs two technical manuals, TM1403 "Test and Operation" as well as TM1404 "Repair". You will want/need both, did you order both? TM1403 will have all the info on gauges and test ports. If you have the manuals on the way, you should have them in a couple days. I would wait, review the TM1403 manual to get what is actually called for as the 450G transmission is not the same as the HLR used up through the 450E.

ordered thru Ebay from Great Oak Publishing for $45. Supposed to be both manuals. Preview of the manuals looked like they are copies of the original JD manuals.

I think you may want to check again. The ad says the TM1404 manual has about 630 pages (information I have tells me the JD TM1404 manual has 626 pages. The TM1403 Test and Operation Manual has 612 pages. That would total about 1238 pages, not about 630 pages. Searching eBay and the GreatOaksPublishing store on eBay, it appears they do not offer the TM1403 Manual. Sorry, but I doubt you are going to be getting much of the diagnostic info you are going to need. The line right on the front cover of the manual in their ad on eBay says both manuals are needed, as was printed on at least some of the John Deere publication runs.

yep, you're right. I just skimmed over the wording. I'll be glad to get any info I can tho. No loss.
