1979 Cat D6D Engine Trouble

Hi everyone, I am trying to get a cat D6D sn 04x started that has sat for a while. The previous owner said the engine was loosing power and so he parked it. It has only sat for a few years inside. I disconnected and blew air through the fuel line and replaced the filters. There is a good supply of fuel to the pump and I have bled the air out. I also took the side cover off the pump (0R0908) to verify that the metering sleeves and rack were not stuck. Everything looked great.
It will crank and fire but it doesnt get much further than that. It will sort of halfway try to run but it never gets on top of itself. It acts like it is fighting itself. It smokes black when it begins to fire/ halfway run. I gave it a little ether hoping that would help it get going but it doesnt help. I have the air cleaner assembly off and the intake in the head is open.
It has good fuel pressure and the oil pressure begins to raise but it doesnt build past the red zone while cranking. Im honestly beginning to wonder if it spun a bearing or something.
Does anyone have any last suggestions before I start tearing into it further?
Thank you!!

Mine acted similar to yours, caterpillar technician tried to get it started but hard as he tried it wouldnt start. He took off the oil filter, cut it open and found metal in between the pleats.Long story short, I ended up majoring the 3306 engine, very expensive!

Does it have any starting aids like intake heater, block heater, etc. Do you have fuel at the injector connections? Have you checked the compression?

First thought is been run hot and low compression, that is what it sounds like black smoke and just want pickup, next would be failure in the front gear train allowing it to be out of time or lastly as you indicated a spun bearing holding the engine back. Either get the compression checked or get ready for a tear down.

Sounds silly I know, but is it running backwards? BTDT

04X should have a turbo charged 3306 engine, black smoke lack of air, take the air intake hose off the turbo, with your finger (not a screwdriver) see if the impeller is turning freely, if not that could be the cause of your trouble, if it's free button it up again and as stated above screw off the oil filter and examine the top for metal, or if you have a new filter on hand cut the old one open to examine between the pleats, if you do find metal it is more than likely a bearing has picked up and if that happened the engine would have a knock, one more thing is the oil clean, could it have run out of oil and been refilled?.

if it has been setting like you say the rack in the pump is probably stuck and need to either plan on a mode of shut down without cutting the fuel or getting the rack to move so it will start because it is stuck in the off position.
