Cat D2 year Identification

Hi all,

This is my first post to start learning about the D2 Cat. I'm looking at one to buy, it has a serial number 5U-15692. I can't seem to locate anything online that helps me know what year this is.

I'm guessing '1953, but it could be newer. The 5U is the wide track with 16" tracks, 5-rollers, solid front idler, looks to have a #41 hydraulic pump behind the brush guard, PTO in the rear over the draw bar, not sure what kind of dozer blade this is? Also-I'm unsure about the clutch. Is it a dry clutch or wet clutch? Is there a serial number cutoff to determine?

I assume it is the 311 diesel engine, with gas pony motor. Not sure if its electric or not.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Ur dozer is a mid year run 1955... Dry clutch.....looks like a intergal tool blade due to the brackets by the sprockets... electric start pony... good little dozer... hope this helps...

Thank you for your help! I'm looking into the tool bar configuration now-I guess you could add a ripper on the rear-

I would opt for a D-4 as the roller frame is much better built in them. The bushings get worn on the D-2 and will let the tracks run off if bad enough. The D-4 has an arm that goes in under the tractor and has a rod bearing looking deal at the rear to hold the roller frame aligned with the sprocket. It can pivot with the roller frame as the front axle moves. Been around our D-4 since I was a kid. Plowed with it back in the 70's through the 80's. Would still be using them for tillage except it is slow loading and unloading for each farm over the 10 miles apart.
