I'm mildly looking at a ford 555C with no forward go. Looking at the pictures in the cab it looks like there is a lever for a gear diven transmission with maybe 4 gears. Not sure of more than that since I can't see anymore than that in the cab. Would this have a hydraulic or electric shuttle or clutch or other means of switching direction forward and reverse. Price seems good and looks like it might be pretty tight machine. Less than 10,000.00

The C model was the first to have electric solenoid F N R and torque converter lock-up on the reverser lever. The reverser is the housing between the engine and 4 speed trans-axle. You may want to check continuity thru the lever switch.. Just a heads up , If the switching mechanism on the column is messed up, I have used a universal turn signal from NAPA and wired it to work the electronic solenoids. FNH or Case didn't sell the switch separately.. The only thing that wouldn't work with this turn signal set-up was the torque converter lock-up with this farmer repair. Most don't need it as it would be for long distance roading the machine to jobs.

Thankyou Roy. Is there anything more to look at for problems or anything else that would affect the forward reverse movement on this unit?

There is a possibility of clutch pack failure inside the reverser. I'd look for the easier , cheaper fix before worrying about internal problems.. Those direction reversers are pretty stout for having relatively small clutch packs doing all the work. Been a while since I've gotten into them, There used to be a pressure tap that could be accessed thru the 4 bolt metal plate in the bottom of the clutch housing right behind the engine. There should be a steel line with a plug on the end of it. Take the plug out and put a gauge with hose so you can read the pressures while operating the reverser .... Brakes locked , gearshift in neutral, rear tires off the ground and of course blocked in that position... You can't be too careful.. I lost a good friend a couple of years ago due to a Jeep falling off jack stands when he took the driveshaft out.
